AECOM ’s Design and Consulting Services-Americas legal department is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Counsel. This position can be based out of any major AECOM office in Canada (for example Markham, Calgary, Burnaby, Montreal, Mississauga). The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in construction law and legal issues related to contracts for engineering, construction, and other technical services.
The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Guidance on risk management and adherence to company policies
Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, subcontracts and other legal documents relating to architecture, engineering, construction, environmental, and other services provided by the company to clients in the public and private sectors, including documents related to teaming arrangements, joint ventures, confidentiality agreements, licenses, purchase and sales agreements, insurance, and other matters
Act in an advisory capacity making recommendations that may have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization’s business
Work with management and staff to resolve pre-litigation disputes and potential claims
Supervise and manage litigation utilizing outside counsel retained by the company to maximize quality and cost-effectiveness
Manage external counsel and litigation budgets
Review and conduct research into legislation, cases and legal precedents and emerging government policies to the extent required to address contract-specific or other matters
Prepare and review legal memoranda and briefs relating to organizational risks and activities
Provide staff with guidance on compliance with federal and provincial laws, statutes and regulations
Provide support to multiple offices
Minimum Requirements
L.L.B. or J.D. Degree or equivalent from accredited law school
Member in good standing with bar in any Canadian Province
4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
Demonstrated legal experience with a major contractor, consultant or law firm in the areas of engineering and construction law
Demonstrated drafting and negotiation experience involving professional services and construction related agreements
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Ability to travel
Preferred Qualifications
Fluent in English and French
Prior experience at an engineering, architecture or construction company
Well-developed communications skills; ability to clearly and concisely express legal issues and analysis as it pertains to business and technical concerns to executive management, commercial and finance colleagues, technical colleagues and peers
Self-driven & resourceful to achieve goals independently and in groups
Flexibility to adjust and thrive in an environment with changing requirements, schedules and priorities
Ability to generate ideas, make recommendations & come to consensus
Excellent writing, presentation, and meeting facilitation skills
