The Role

The Metis Nation of Ontario Healing and Wellness Branch has implemented a Victims’ Services program, including the piloting of targeted services for Métis women and children, older adults, GBLTQQ12S, persons with disabilities and youth who are victims of violence and the provision of cultural awareness training for key stakeholders, such as police services and mainstream victim service providers who engage with Métis individuals and families The project is composed of four interrelated components: resource/program development, staff/community capacity building, service delivery and networking/training.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Liaise and establish linkages with various levels of stakeholders (local, provincial, federal) Indigenous and main-stream service delivery bodies
• Program development consistent with funding agreement including module development and delivery, community engagement and system navigation support
• Implement program ensuring adherence to work-plan
• Research venues for Métis appropriate diversion programs/ceremonies
• Provide client services including: short-term peer counselling, support, referrals, assistance with the development of individual safety plans, provision of Métis-specific resources, provision of information on the court process and court orientation, assistance with the preparation of victim impact statements, arrangements for court accompaniment, advocacy and follow-up
• Support the Communications team to ensure Victims’ Services website information is current and accurate and prepare articles for publication in the Métis Voyageur
• Enhance existing MNO Healing and Wellness Branch program procedures to include direction on working with victims of crime; develop training modules with delivery to frontline staff
• Delivery of cultural sensitivity workshops to external stakeholders in the victims services spectrum to enhance understanding of Métis perspectives
• Perform administrative duties such as filing, emailing, telephone, use of standard office equipment reports such as financial and program progress as prescribed by funder
• Proven client service skills using trauma-informed practices and cultural competency

• Ability to physically support clients needing assistance
• Must be able to work as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision
• Proficiency with computer programs
• Relevant background in Indigenous health promotion, with sensitivity to Métis-focused promotion
• Knowledge of the Métis Nation of Ontario
• Knowledge of Indigenous programs and services
• Well-developed administrative, organizational and communication skills

Qualifications

• Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
• Experience working in Victims Services or Violence Against Women with a focus on at least one of: Women and Children, or Older Adults, or GLBTQQI2S, or Youth, or people living with disabilities.
• Demonstrated experience working in coordinating and delivering community-based programs or projects
• Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain
• Completion and maintenance of Vulnerable Sector Check and Verification
• A reliable vehicle (or ability to rent), driver’s licence, $1,000,000 liability insurance, and a clean driving record
• Flexibility to work extended hours as necessary
• Ability to occasionally travel within Ontario for limited periods of time
• Post-Secondary education in a health related field and minimum 2 years’ experience in providing health or social support services or to clients in an Indigenous setting, or equivalent combination of experience and training
