General Accountability

Provides technical support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring and co-ordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment as related to the design and testing of TTC’s systems and equipment for the department; assists with the preparation of estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures and drawings; conducts engineering analyses, evaluations, tests and draws conclusions; conducts investigations into electrical, signaling or track problems; and detects new areas needing engineering attention to improve safety, productivity and cost effectiveness.


Key Job Functions

  • Layout/prepare designs and drawings for various projects; check the quality of production by Design Draftspersons in accordance with TTC design standards and various codes, Engineers’ notes, rough sketches, verbal instructions and own design concepts.
  • Review and interpret existing conditions, drawings, specifications, and material submissions; obtain additional data necessary for the completion of accurate drawings and specifications, and conformity with TTC specifications.
  • Initiate and research Design Standards; research information to ensure final designs are practical and meet code requirements or TTC and Industry Design Standards; conduct studies as directed; research reference drawings for structural details.
  • Provide direction and guidance to operational maintenance personnel, supervisory staff, students or on-site contract employees regarding existing equipment, new installations or inspection work.
  • Troubleshoot and investigate operational problems and defect analyses and evaluate and provide engineered solutions for new and/or existing systems; investigate the effectiveness of changes in procedures, designs, or materials.
  • Administer the construction, inspection, testing and commissioning of new, existing and proposed section specific systems as required.
  • Assemble, prepare and/or review various reports, staff summary sheets, project status and progress reports, documentation on inspection visits, and other correspondence related to the work.
  • Participate in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Electrical Engineering) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Certification through OACETT is considered an asset

Additional Requirements

  • Sound knowledge of electrical design principles, methods, procedures, practices and measurements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mathematics, research procedures and standard/code regulations applicable to electrical engineering technology. Sound judgement, proven technical design skills; well-developed organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Effective verbal communication and technical report writing skills
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Hydro Electric Safety Code, Ontario Building Code, TTC standards, CSA standards and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Must have a working knowledge of CADD (preferably Microstation CADD) and other computerized applications applicable to the work (e.g. MS Office, MS Word, Excel etc.).
