The Analyst will support the Public Health Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Population Health Business Intelligence teams within the provincial portfolio of Public Health Surveillance and Informatics (PHSI). The position will work as part of a team that collects, analyzes, and interprets information concerning population and public health. The Analyst will support data quality efforts to support the provision of data and information in response to complex queries from clients across all levels of the organization. The Analyst will work with existing team members and consult with various programs across AHS. The Analyst will play a key role in the completion of routine and ad hoc requests related to disease and injury surveillance encompassing areas such as acute and chronic disease, injury and communicable disease, and emerging public health issues. The Analyst also provides advice, and will recommend and develop processes to ensure high quality data collection and validation. The Analyst will work with multiple data types and sources and is expected to support analytics that integrate data across multiple and complex data sources. The Analyst is expected to perform analysis using a variety of tools, including accessing large datasets on Oracle data servers, statistical software coding in SAS, and use of visualization software such as Tableau.
Development of Information Works directly with PHSI team members and program areas across AHS to detect issues and establish processes to ensure high quality data collection and validation. Analyzes available source systems and designs appropriate data extracts/scripts to pull required data and information from multiple systems to create reports. Analysis, including generating descriptive statistics. Provides interpretations and recommendations. Ensures the integrity and rigor of primary and secondary datasets for operational and strategic planning and evaluation purposes, including data retrieval and analysis and report preparation. Prepares and presents findings, providing consultation and advice. Process Improvement and Planning Applies best practice in querying, integration, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of large datasets for quality assurance purposes. Provides advice and recommendations to PHSI and programs regarding best practices for data completion, standardization, and validation, in support of PHSI’s goals. Works with PHSI staff to develop actionable strategies and reports to facilitate the collection and analysis of high-quality public health data.
Required Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in a health-related field with a strong quantitative component in a related field (e.g., community health sciences, health economics, biomedical statistics, epidemiology, quality assurance), or several years of equivalent experience. Experience working with large data sets, relational databases and tools for querying, integrating, analyzing, interpreting, reporting and disseminating data. Proficiency with analytical tools such as SAS, SQL, R and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau). A minimum of 2 years’ experience conducting data analysis in a healthcare or comparable setting.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Knowledge and ability to produce a variety of descriptive statistics. Proficiency in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills to produce reports and communicate with staff across the organization. Ability to understand clinical issues, and to communicate effectively with a broad variety of people at different levels within the organization and with different skills and expertise. Experience in screening, cleaning, linking, creating, modifying and analyzing datasets in a statistical or database-management software package. Excellent interpersonal relations and demonstrated ability to work with others effectively in teams. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access) and the ability to become proficient with new software packages. Must abide by the highest standards of confidentiality and have a sound understanding of the principles within Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, as well as the Health Information Act. Experience with macros, stored procedures and statistical software applications an asset.. Broad understanding of health systems an asset.
