Sophi was created within the walls of The Globe and Mail, a national icon and Canada’s most recognized media brand. The Globe knew that transformation was required in the media space and developed a solution to help them do just that. After achieving incredible results at The Globe, Sophi was commercialized to benefit content publishers around the world. We then began adapting Sophi technologies to address similar problems in other industries. Sophi is dedicated to bringing about business transformation, by unlocking the value of content and optimizing the user journey. We are an agile software development team consisting of Machine Learning and Software Engineers, Data Scientists, DevOps, Front End Developers, UX, QA, Product Managers, Scrum Masters as well as sales and marketing professionals on the non-technical side. POSITION OVERIVEW:
The Sophi team is looking for early-career Software Engineers with some knowledge of functional programming, microservices, SQL and NoSQL databases, who have interest in pursuing a career in Data Engineering. Ideal candidates are recent graduates with a passion for both business and technology innovation, and more importantly, they are quick learners and can adapt with changing technologies. We currently work with Scala, Kotlin, Java, Python, Postgres, Kafka, and other cloud native technologies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate and actively contribute to the design of test harness various application components for maximum quality and performance across a vast array of environments
- Develop a deep understanding of data
- Work with Sr. engineers to develop and optimize test harnesses via automation
- Work with the QA team to understand the key product objectives
- Work with the DevOps team to setup test pipelines in CI/CD
- Document the procedures, standards, tech-stack, test architecture, framework, and best practices
- Have a commitment to collaborative problem solving, system design, and product quality
- Contribute to backlog reviews, technical solutions design, and implementations
- Be disciplined in implementing software in a timely manner while ensuring product quality isn’t compromised
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong analysis and problem-solving skills
- Adequate understanding of good programming practices, design patterns, Functional Programming, and Object Oriented Analysis and Design
- Collaborate effectively with teammates and technical partners
- Work across all phases of the software development lifecycle (planning, design, implementation, deployment, operations and support)
- Formal training in software engineering, computer science or computer engineering.
- Ideally 1+ years of hands on experience with Python and/or another backend development language
- Exposure to cloud-based architectures
- Hands-on experience with RESTful design.
- RPC frameworks such as gRPC
- Exposure to CI/CD in Kubernetes environment is an asset
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
VACCINATION POLICY:
All offers of employment with The Globe and Mail are conditional upon the candidate being Fully Vaccinated. To be Fully Vaccinated is defined as someone who has received the full series of a vaccine or a combination of vaccines accepted by the Government of Canada (currently Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen) and has received the last dose at least 14 days prior to their start date.
