Centrally located on Vancouver Island on Coast Salish Territory within the territories of the Nanoose (Snaw’naw’as) First Nations and Qualicum First Nations, School District 69 (Qualicum) serves a stable student population of approximately 4700 students, nearly 600 of whom are of Indigenous ancestry. The region exemplifies the best of Vancouver Island living, with ideal coastal climate, ocean and forests close at hand, and desirable small-town lifestyle while still enjoying convenient city access. The successful candidate will develop a close working relationship with our local rightsholders, as well as with families of First Nations and Metis ancestry, while leading and supporting all staff in the critical work of improving educational outcomes and moving our context towards Truth and Reconciliation.
The Position
This position reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools and provides leadership regarding the success of Indigenous learners and learning. Key responsibilities include:
Leading and supervising the Indigenous Education Department and its staff
Supporting the Indigenization of our system through enhanced curriculum, culture, and knowledge
Collaborating with principals and vice-principals to develop instructional knowledge and supports leading to success for Indigenous learners
Implementing assessments to monitor the quality of programs and services for Indigenous learners
Establishing and administering the annual budget for targeted funding
If required, working with Indigenous communities and stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate an Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement (AEEA), and/or a Local Education Agreement (LEA)
Overseeing the Department of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) Nominal Roll
Collecting, managing, reporting on local and Ministry Aboriginal student data
Working directly with the Senior Leadership Team on all aspects of education and instruction, and with the Human Resources Department on all aspects of staff employment
The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience and attributes:
Teacher Regulation Branch certification or eligibility
Masters of Education preferred or equivalent post-secondary graduate training
Strong knowledge of Indigenous curriculum, culture, challenges, and opportunities with the school system
Extensive and successful experience working with students of Indigenous ancestry and communities
Successful previous administrative experience would be an asset
Superior interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Exemplary organizational and planning skills
Strong managerial skills and financial/budget experience
Additional consideration will be given to candidates with Indigenous ancestry
