Clinical Educator

The Calgary Drop-In Centre (the DI) is more than emergency shelter. We provide emergency shelter, health services and housing programs to people who need support. Our programs and services connect people to permanent housing that meets their individual needs. Rooted in community and fueled by kindness, the DI proudly serves as part of the Homeless-Serving System of Care.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Health Services, the Clinical Educator is responsible for educating and coaching team members to promote development and sustainability of clinical best practices, achieve comprehensive care planning and assist in the implementation of evidence-based practice. Working closely with Nursing Coordinators, the Clinical Educator will also participate in ongoing quality improvement, program development and evaluation.
The Clinical Educator will play a key role in leading and facilitating planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for Health Services staff including orientation, continuing education and clinical skills development. The Clinical Educator will work in a multidisciplinary team and provide support across all Health Services with some direct client service provision such as developing and facilitating Health Promotion programming.
Time Commitment
40 hours per rotation with 5 days on and 2 days off. Some unusual hours may be required from time to time as the need arises. Schedule may be altered at the discretion of management.
Job Duties
Create and deliver presentations and workshops for clinical and non-clinical staff
Take part in professional learning development plans for staff, as required by management
Maintain active learning and practice to ensure relevant, expert and updated knowledge and skills align with emerging and best practices
Provide nursing coverage as required
Assist with complex care planning and crisis intervention
Deliver and facilitate health education sessions to clients (individual and group)
Provide support and assistance with reviewing and updating clinical policy and procedures
Collaborate with external community agencies and service providers to ensure optimal client care is provided
Required Competencies
Completion of an accredited registered nursing education program
Active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider certification
3-5 years of experience in addictions and mental health
Previous experience as an educator, facilitator or trainer is an asset
Ability to communicate effectively and to adapt communication style to meet the needs of clients of various ages and ethnic backgrounds
Ability to effectively engage and instruct staff towards skill-building and professional development
Knowledge of emerging best practices as it relates to addiction and mental health and ability to transfer knowledge to a larger, diverse multidisciplinary team
Ability to develop relationships with a wide variety of services stakeholders
Knowledge of community resources available throughout Calgary
Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to improve projects, programs and processes
Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
Proficient in Office365 and Microsoft Office Suite 2016
Eager to learn new systems and adopt improved best practices
Must demonstrate initiative and work autonomously
Working Conditions
Front-line staff are exposed to emotionally disturbing events, such as: medical distress, threatened/actual serious injury, violence, abuse, and death; where clients may be experiencing fear, terror, hopelessness, rage, self-harm and conflict. It is understood and accepted that you will be working in distress and/or high-stress situations, which may include emergency response where resiliency and stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused is imperative. Exposure to bodily fluids may also occur.
