What will I be doing?
The Junior Accountant will provide accounting support activities for the Finance team by performing daily accounting tasks contributing to the overall efficient operation of the department. They will be responsible for accounts payable functions, payroll & onboarding, as well as general accounting tasks, reports and audits.
Junior Accountant Responsibilities:
· Collect, verify and input a variety of payroll related information (direct deposits, taxable benefits, salary changes, vacation entitlement, etc.)
· Verification of timesheets
· Prepare various payroll journal entries and accruals
· Reconcile payroll totals and ensure remittances for payroll deductions, contributions, and savings plans are made on time
· Verify and release payroll submissions for subsidiary companies on a bi-weekly basis
· T4 and ROE preparation, verification, and processing
· Process monthly government remittances, EHT and WSIB payments
· Accounts payable functions such as verifying and entering all payables and issuing payment cheques or electronic funds transfers
· Allocate, post, and verify all financial transactions
· Prepare monthly income statement reports
· Reconciles vendor statements, and utilities. Posts to and balances ledgers, processes payments and compiles monthly reports
· Regularly liaises with vendors and internal team members, ensuring invoices are paid, and any issues are dealt with in a timely manner. Requests credits when necessary
· File maintenance of invoices and digitization of paper invoices
· Review and audit of invoices and other claims for payment generated by various departments.
· Reviews detailed monthly expenditure reports for each department, prepares adjusting entries as required and audits reports for coding errors and duplicate payments.
· Provide timely, complete, accurate and relevant financial statements and participate in streamline financial accounting reporting processes
· Performs accounts receivable tasks, including reconciliation of group billings and FITS
· Perform HR administrative tasks as directed by the HR Manager and General Manager
· Acting as part of the support team for month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial activities
· General administration (filing, mail distribution, etc.) and supporting colleagues’ absences.
· Special projects and reports as required
· Assists with the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
· Any other task assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.
Junior Accountant Requirements:
· A post-secondary education in Business Administration, accounting or equivalent in related experience.
· 1-3 years progressive experience working in an accounts payable or general accounting role.
· Previous payroll experience preferred.
· Previous experience using QuickBooks preferred.
· Oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
· Effective time management, organizational abilities. Ability to prioritize.
· Knowledgeable in the use of computers to document and record audit findings (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
· Analytical and effective problem-solving skills.
· Strategic thinking-able to develop sound contingency plans.
· Ability to deal effectively in high pressure, dynamic situations with a large degree of autonomy.
· Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
