The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Student, Engineering, In Situ Applications to join its talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Applications branch. This position will work within the In Situ Applications Conformance team and assist with reviewing applications by collecting, assessing, and presenting technical information to support risk-informed decision making and ensuring that approval requirements are sufficiently adhered to. The individual in this role will have a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of all in situ projects within Alberta, including how they operate, how they manage their impacts, their successes and challenges, and what they are doing to meet regulatory requirements.
The In Situ Regulatory Applications group is comprised of various engineers and environmental science experts who all work in a coordinated effort to effectively manage the regulatory lifecycle of in situ oil sands developments. The Student, Engineering, In Situ Applications will have the opportunity to learn from all of these professionals and gain an appreciation for how Alberta’s regulatory framework is supported by the technical sciences to ensure the safe, environmentally responsible and efficient recovery of our oil sands resource. Your Key Responsibilities:

• As part of a multi-disciplinary team, assist in the review of Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and Oil Sands Conservation Act (OSCA) applications for proposed industrial components, and their resulting environmental impacts, for in situ oil sands projects.

• Collect all necessary technical and environmental information within relevant reports and submissions, analyze it for best practices, trend information, monitoring methods, and mitigation effectiveness. Using this information, prepare a report that informs and supports the development of risk-informed assessment criteria that increases the effectiveness and efficiency of reviews.

• Assist with desktop surveillance activities and approval maintenance, including reviews of Directive 054 presentations, to ensure projects are compliant with all applicable rules and regulations.

Qualifications:

• Enrolled in an undergraduate engineering program

• Strong analytical and data presentation skills

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with an emphasis on technical writing

• Strong capabilities and experience with spreadsheets (e.g. MS Excel)

• Familiarity with oil and gas facilities, specifically oil sands related, would be an asset

• Familiarity with regulatory requirements within the province of Alberta is an asset

Additional Requirements/Information:

• This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately 4 months.

• Proof of enrollment in a registered institution and returning to studies following this placement will be a condition of hire.

• All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

• Percentage of field work vs. office work is approximately 5% field, 95% office.
