Summary of position:

The Provincial Pole Safety Director will be responsible for the continuous development of Safety Policies/Procedures and the effective implementation of these policies. The Safety Director is ultimately responsible for having an effective workplace safety program and culture in place. This position directs the resources and activities of the organization to support the Safety program by providing advice and guidance to the management staff. The primary challenge is to continually maintain an appropriate level of awareness, knowledge, and preparedness across the Provincial Pole organization to create a culture that prioritizes effective safety and balances overall associated costs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Provincial Pole Safety Program. This includes the continuous development of safety policies and procedures as well as effective implementation of these policies.

  • Manage the reporting procedure for all accident, injuries, and incidents. Review findings with senior management team.

  • Develop and provide technical and administrative direction on all safety policies and programs which bear critical importance to overall corporate objectives, operations, and profitability of the various territories.

  • Oversee and enforce compliance with all OHS,CEPA, and DOT Regulations pertaining to company operations.

  • Review internal safety policies and practices to ensure they are current and appropriate; conduct hazard and risk assessments and develop new or, where necessary, make recommendations to senior management to amend safety policies and procedures.

  • Communicate monthly safety performance to OUS organization.

  • Communicate routine memorandums and alerts to heighten safety awareness.

  • Chairperson of the Central Safety Committee.

  • Conduct and/or participate in semi-annual staff safety meetings.

  • Work collaboratively with Operations Support team to improve operational efficiencies and reduce safety related incidents and costs.

  • Create and maintain a safety culture reflective of the Provincial Pole /OUS commitment to an accident and injury free workplace.

  • Contribute to other related projects and plans not specifically noted necessary to obtain the objectives of the Company

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises the Provincial Pole Claims Department.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Five (5) plus years of management experience.

Experience with the following safety Programs, ISN, Avetta, COR, Comply Works. A NCSO certification or ability to acquire one.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Work Environment

Successful candidate will be required to travel throughout Canada to oversee the numerous provincial projects. Will be required to travel frequently and be able to perform infield visits for safety related activities. Occasionally be required to travel to US for training and meeting purposes. Multiple office settings throughout the provinces.

*Home office location requires special approval. If home office work location is granted, the expectation is that the associate may be required to travel and attend regular meetings at one of the OUS offices as needed to support the project.
