MPI’s Legal Services Department has an exciting opportunity for experienced Legal Counsel to join our team due to a recent promotion.
As a Legal Counsel focused on Litigation you will provide a wide variety of civil litigation and administrative law advocacy services. This includes preparing legal opinions, conducting litigation at the Court of King’s Bench, conducting Internal Reviews (injury claims), and managing complex appeals under the Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP). There may also be an opportunity to participate in MPI’s annual General Rate Application before the Public Utilities Board.
Lead, coordinate, and provide legal research and opinions on a wide variety of issues.
Assist the Legal leadership team with issues of increased complexity and risk that impact the corporation across all its lines of business.
Conduct general litigation, including the defence of actions brought against the Corporation and its insureds.
Conduct and manage Internal Reviews of benefits paid to claimants under the Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP).
Prepare and conduct appeals before AICAC.
Conduct preliminary fact gathering, legal research, and analysis (statutory and case law) to determine the parameters of a potential legal position in relation to a third party, and whether the relative strength of the position justifies the cost of litigation.
Mentor, advise, and instruct entry-level and mid-level Legal Counsels, articling students, and Internal Review Officers as required.
A Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree from a recognized Canadian (or equivalent) law school.
Call to the Manitoba Bar, or eligibility to be Called to the Manitoba Bar.
Two – three years experience practicing civil litigation, insurance and administrative law.
Significant experience in drafting pleadings, and conducting examinations for discovery, motions, trials, appeals, and administrative hearings.
Demonstrated skills in the area of legal research.
Strong negotiation skills.
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and time constraints, and to manage several projects simultaneously.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and an eye for detail.
Fluency in French (would be an asset but is not required).
