What Is the Opportunity?
The Select Managing Director (MD) position ensures the proper execution of Select underwriting strategies for all lines of business and brokers through a team of Underwriting Managers. The leader is responsible for underwriting, profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with underwriting strategies. This leader hires, develops and retains staff with emphasis on development through guidance and mentoring.
What Will You Do?
The MD direct report base consists of Underwriting Managers and Managing Account Executives. Each Underwriting Manager have approximately 10 Account Executives as direct reports and Managing Account Executives have approximately 5 Account Executives as direct reports.
The MD has overall responsibility for talent development and performance management for all Underwriting Managers, Managing Account Executives and Account Executives on their team.
The MD works closely with the Canada Business Insurance Field Leader & Sales Directors in support of regional business plan achievement.
Collaborate with Home Office Underwriting, Product Development and Product Management to develop and implement regional and line of business, segment or program strategies based on specific or unique regional or provincial needs or requirements. Ensure consistent and timely execution of underwriting strategies through adherence to defined standards, processes and controls. Ensure underwriting integrity/quality through timely completion and analysis of Underwriting Self Assessments. Works closely with the Regional Underwriting Officer to assure timely delivery of technical training based on identified needs and opportunities.
Works closely with the Operations Director to assure implementation and consistent execution of workflow and service processes and hierarchies. Works closely with leadership to achieve retention, growth and profit targets. Works closely with Sales & Distribution to assure Account Executives possess required competencies to effectively attract business and negotiate on larger premium accounts. Works closely with Enterprise partners to identify business opportunities on behalf of the Enterprise.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
College diploma in insurance related program or 4-year university degree.
Knowledge of small commercial product, operations, and broker distribution.
Previous managerial experience; ability to manage own work and direct the work of others.
Ability to set clear direction by defining goals and priorities to execute business strategy and drive results.
Leads and manages through change.
Exceptional organization, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, interpersonal, time management, verbal and written communication skills.
