Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent, the role will provide technical expertise to the Operation and Project across all water and waste management functions. The Environmental Technical Specialist will take a lead role in water and waste management and ensure compliance to regulation as part of the overall Environmental Management System.
Main Accountabilities
Provide technical support for the Project to ensure overall environmental compliance to all permits, licenses, government/agency regulations, and other legal agreements with landowners for all water and waste related activities.
Understanding and delivery of complex and interrelated environmental actions related to interactions with the project and the Arctic environment and providing support to these issues on a day to day basis.
Work with site management in the support of risk assessment and change-management initiatives.
Conduct QA/QC on monitoring compliance activities related to water management;
Notify of any non-conformities and assist in correctives actions;
Work in collaboration with all departments and permitting team related to water and waste management;
Responsible for the review of construction scopes against regulatory requirements, permit conditions, commitments and Environmental Management System requirements
Support and develop site-specific erosion and sediment control plans across the Project
Reviews erosion and sediment control plans for site data, existing and planned topography, and appropriateness of measures to control erosion and sedimentation
Complete all required reports as requested;
Conduct in field inspections of site infrastructure;
Assist in review and update procedures and SOPs;
Liaise with technical services, project engineers and operations with data requests and provide support if needed;
Research, evaluate and make recommendations for projects
Implementation of key environmental programs and initiatives as directed by the Environmental Superintendent or Manager
Main Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental science, engineering or related program required
5-7 years environmental experience on mining operations and/or construction projects
Knowledge of environmental database and GIS software Required
Extensive knowledge for relevant environmental legislation, standards and effective industry practices.
Valid Provincial or Territorial driver’s license
Knowledge of current environmental legislation (Nunavut and Federal) and regulatory reporting Preferred
Professional Engineer designation preferred
Erosion and Sediment Control Professional preferred
