This position has an end date of 3/31/2024 and offers a salary of $22.08 per hour plus a 5% Second Language Premium.

Location – North Campus Edmonton. This role is in-person.

Working for the Department/Faculty

The Global Academic Leadership Development (GALD) program is a professional development program for Chinese university administrators coordinated by the University of Alberta International . Working with the China Scholarship Council, the 3-month program aims to expose Chinese university administrators to Canadian practices in university governance and administration, and to engage them in cross-cultural understanding of innovative approaches to higher education administration in the new global context. The curriculum of the program includes a series of lectures on university governance and administration in the Canadian context, a few series of lectures in Canadian history, Canadian politics and intercultural communication, a self-chosen research project on comparative higher education, and focus group interviews with counterpart university administrators at the University of Alberta.

Position

Working with the International Collaborative Programs Administrator, the two Program Assistants will provide support in the planning, logistics , communications and delivery of the program. The successful candidate will display strong linguistic skills in both English and Mandarin, good understanding about the higher education system in Canada, good knowledge about the University of Alberta and the greater Edmonton area, and a willingness and passion to work as a cross-cultural broker. An ideal candidate would be a graduate student who has good institutional knowledge, strong bilingual skills, and a flexible schedule. This position requires work during regular business hours, and evenings and weekends.

Duties

• Provide interpretation for lectures on topics such as higher education governance and administration (English to Mandarin, Mandarin to English)
• Do document translation (English to Mandarin, Mandarin to English)
• Plan and deliver social events for program participants within defined budgets and in adherence to risk management policies
• Assist participants with pre-arrival and post-arrival in person, via email and/or instant messaging
• Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders
• Organize, update, and maintain resources, schedules, and contact records
• Manage email inbox, communicate with program participants and triage inquiries
• Analyze and compile statistics for reporting purposes
• Organize electronic documents and maintain digital filing systems
• Maintain online presence in social media
• Assist with day-to-day operations and perform other duties as required
• Accompany participants on overnight trips
• Lead excursions within Edmonton using both chartered and public transportation
• Assist with day-to-day program operations and perform other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must be enrolled in a full-time PhD program at the University of Alberta.

Specifically, the ideal candidate must be highly organized and demonstrate the following skills and capabilities:

• Fluency in Mandarin (spoken, written)
• Fluency in English (spoken, written)
• Ability to interpret for lectures on topics such as higher education governance and administration (English to Mandarin, Mandarin to English)
• Ability to do document translation (English to Mandarin, Mandarin to English)
• Good knowledge of the University of Alberta and Edmonton
• Strong communication skills (cross-cultural and public speaking)
• Availability to work evenings and weekends
• Excellent organizational & independent problem-solving skills
• The ability to work with a team, take initiative & work under pressure
• The ability to adjust to an irregular work schedule
• The ability to work in an office environment and meet deadlines when delivering reports, event information and schedules
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word (Excel, Word, Powerpoint ) and databases systems, email, social media and Internet research skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge about the Chinese higher education system would be an asset.
