The Company
AVAC Group is on a mission to advance Canada’s AgTech innovation ecosystem, by investing in community and venture development. We achieve that primarily through Carrot Ventures, a venture studio formed to address the gap between the development of promising innovations and successful commercial outcomes.
With over $100 million in assets under management, AVAC draws on a long history of venture capital investing. We currently invest selectively as a limited partner in other venture capital funds, and while we no longer invest directly into operating companies, we have done so over 100 times in our history.
The Fund
Carrot Ventures is Canada’s pre-eminent AgTech venture studio. We co-found and lead the seed financing in companies we form.
Carrot seeks innovative technologies with the potential to transform our food and agricultural sectors. We combine promising intellectual property with strong leadership into a newly formed company, properly structured and well capitalized for the journey ahead.
We offer inventors an experienced team and capital to commercialize their technology. We offer CEOs a vetted technology, start-up capital, back-office and business development support, and a lead investor. Investors receive well qualified and structured deals for consideration. All stakeholders are expected to benefit from a faster path to commercial success and improved financial returns.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the CEO, the candidate will primarily focus on Carrot Ventures, with some time devoted to other activities at AVAC. We operate in a consensus-based decisioning environment, with annual goals factoring into compensation.
As a member of the Carrot Ventures team, you will be primarily responsible for assessing investment opportunities by conducting technical analysis and market assessments of technology disclosures. You will have the opportunity to contribute to pipeline development, deal structuring, and assisting portfolio companies achieve their potential.
As we work mostly from the office with some hybrid work flexibility, ideally you live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. There may be a requirement for occasional travel, primarily to attend industry events.
Candidate Profile
By character, you’re naturally curious. In our environment, that means that you’re inherently motivated to find deals, to assess technology, and advance the fund towards achieving its goals.
You’re comfortable working independently and as part of a small team, taking accountability for both individual and team success. You look for opportunities to contribute and improve fund operations and efficiencies.
You want to participate in advancing the agricultural and food industry, taking an active interest in evolving industry dynamics. You have an interest in innovation and how risk capital can help us achieve a healthy and sustainable planet.
This is a highly technical and analytical role, suitable for someone keen to dig into the science and technology driving innovation.
