What You Will Do
Under the guidance and support of the Project Coordinator, the Employment Advisor (EA) provides job search support and coaching to internationally trained professionals enrolled in the bridging programs who face challenges in accessing relevant employment in their field, due to barriers such as, lack of knowledge related to the Canadian workplace culture, English as a second language, lack of Canadian work experience and awareness of the specific technology used in their field in Canada, having had no exposure to work in Canada. The EA initially meets clients one-on-one and conducts in-depth assessments to develop a rapport and establish a relationship with individual clients and to help them identify personal and environmental needs, concerns and barriers as they relate to their employment goals. The EA develops mutually agreed upon service plans with them to address their employment needs and provide suitable resources and support that would lead to successful employment in their occupation.
The EA manages the process of the assessment, planning, facilitation and makes recommendations for services to meet clients’ needs and promote optimal outcomes. Key activities include collecting information about the occupation specific labour market, monitoring, guiding, and directing clients towards successful employment outcomes. The services provided by the EA includes reviewing, critiquing, and finalizing client resumes and other job search documents, organizing/conducting mock interviews, assisting clients to secure and conduct information interviews, preparing them for employment interviews, facilitating access to resources and ongoing guidance in achieving employment goals. The EA creates and maintains detailed case notes and enters client case management information into the database of the funder regarding the client’s progression through the advising phase and monitors their caseload to meet annual targets agreed upon and documented in the funding agreement. The incumbent conducts funder mandated periodic follow ups at regular intervals for up to 24 months after the clients’ exit from the program – usually upon finding employment in their occupation). Plans and implements events with alumni and industry professionals for panel discussions and other special events, and this may require some evening and weekend work.
