Summer Student – Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation Responsibilities

  • Work directly with skilled Landscape Horticulturist’s to gain first-hand knowledge in the industry;
  • Assist the Landscape Horticulturist in maintaining gardens, parks and other landscape environments through duties such as, but not limited to grass cutting, mulching, weeding, cultivating and line trimming;
  • Assist the Landscape Horticulturist in maintaining hard landscape elements, such as walkways, planters and gazebos;
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment; mowers, motorized vehicles, line trimmers etc
  • Fertilize, irrigate and top dress lawns and play fields;
  • Ensure sport recreational surfaces are safe, painted and prepared for the enjoyment of the local youth soccer and baseball organizations;
  • Assist in ensuring the beautification of the Town through watering planters, park maintenance, garbage’s and cleaning parks and beaches in order to support local and regional tourism to the area;
  • Handling of cash/debit/credit machine and refueling boats at the Municipal Marina Boat Ramp;
  • Support the on-going maintenance of various Town Facilities; duties include, but are not limited to facility cleaning, setup/ take down’s (private rentals and senior programming in the community centre), minor construction maintenance (painting, wood work etc.);
  • Other duties as assigned

Eligibility Requirements And General Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be in full time attendance at a Secondary School, University or Community College recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education and returning to school in September 2024
  • Have and maintain a valid G2 or G driver’s license
  • Experience operating hand held tools and lawn maintenance equipment including tractors and related equipment

Working Conditions

  • 40 hours per week
  • Evening and weekend shifts required
  • Working outside in various weather conditions

Hourly Rate of Pay

$17.00 hour first year students

$19.00 hour second year students
