Position Overview
A regular full-time opportunity exists within the District’s Parks Department for an experienced Community Forester. This is specialized arborist work at a supervisory level that involves both technical and administrative work related to the development, implementation and coordination of tree management plans, programs and procedures.
The Community Forester (Parks) oversees implementation of the tree management program for District parks and public lands, ensuring the consistent application of related policies and procedures and providing advice and recommendations on tree management, forest health restoration, tree canopy retention, identification and treatment of problem or hazard trees, and coordination of emergency tree work, tree planting, and related initiatives.
The Community Forester (Parks) supervises and provides direction to a team of arboriculture staff, which includes providing training, participating in recruitment, and ensuring consistent application of best practices and adherence to proper safety procedures and protocols. The Community Forester (Parks) also coordinates and oversees the work of contractors, prepares and maintains a variety of records, and develops and administers the program budget.
The Community Forester (Parks) responds to public complaints and inquiries, liaises with other departments, agencies and stakeholders, and participates in the development of related programs and strategies. Considerable independent judgement and action are exercised in technical and operational matters while unusual policy matters are discussed with a superior who reviews performance for effectiveness and compliance with established guidelines.
Qualifications: You have a university degree in arboriculture, forestry, environmental science or ecology and considerable related experience in professional forestry work OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Requirements also include certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arborists and certification in Tree Risk Assessment. Preferred applicants are Registered Professional Foresters or Registered Forest Technologists, or are eligible for one of these certifications. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is required.

Compensation The pay range for this unionized position is $41.16 to $48.64 per hour based on a 35-hour work week.
