Alliston & District Humane Society is looking for an experienced full-time veterinary technician to assist with our growing organization. Prior knowledge of shelter medicine is considered an asset.
Duties include:
- Ensuring the health and well-being of shelter animals, located within the shelter itself as well as in foster homes.
- Remaining current on shelter practices and veterinary care and ensuring appropriate information sharing and training
- Consulting with veterinarians on appropriate courses of treatment and care
- Administering vaccinations and other medical treatments as prescribed by a veterinarian including wound and bandage care and medication
- Transporting animals to veterinarians as needed
- Collecting samples and performing SNAP and other tests as required
- Assessing animals on intake and conducting preliminary assessments.
- Restraining animals as appropriate when required.
- Cooperating and communicating with coordinators and volunteers to ensure good animal care
- Overseeing and carrying out recommended vet treatment of shelter animals in concert with coordinators and volunteers.
- Developing and maintaining reference materials and documentation for volunteers including dosage charts for commonly used medications, protocols for treatment of commonly identified diseases
- Training coordinators and volunteers on new protocols, administering medications, medical treatment plans and other animal care procedures
- Providing medical counsels for adopters for commonly identified medical problems.
- Ensuring adherence to safety and quality
- Analyzing current and implementing new and appropriate cleaning and sanitation protocols
- Ordering and maintaining an organized inventory of prescription medications, shampoos, veterinary diets and other vet supplies for shelter use.
- Reviewing and establishing shelter operation procedures and protocols
- Dealing with unexpected problems and situations such as unexpected drop-offs or irate walk-ins
- Maintaining appropriate documentation and records.
Qualifications and Skills
Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in-person.
Flexibility and Adaptability
The successful candidate will be expected to work in all animal areas. Experience with dogs would be particularly useful.
Competitive salary range, negotiable and commensurate with qualifications. Hours and work schedule to be negotiated.
