Why join Fogo Island Inn?
There is nothing ordinary about Fogo Island Inn; not the architecture, not the mission, not the team, not the food, not the hospitality and certainly not the island it belongs to the community it serves.
Fogo Island Inn is a social enterprise and is part of a larger community economic development project led by a registered charity of Canada called Shorefast. Shorefast exists to help secure a resilient future for Fogo Island while inspiring communities worldwide to leverage inherent, place-specific assets in service of collective well-being. We do work that matters; work that is regenerative, not extractive. We do work that makes things better for more people, for communities, for nature.
To toot our own horn, Fogo Island Inn was recently named to the NY Times list of 52 Places for a Changed World. Indeed, Fogo Island Inn is at the forefront of shaping new ways of doing business, new ways of practicing embodied, wholehearted hospitality that is based around relationships not transactions; hospitality that values dignity for our guests, dignity for us as hosts and dignity for our community. Widely and consistently named among the top handful of hotels in the world, the Inn translates the nature and culture of Fogo Island into a hospitality experience so genuine and specific that it is frequently described as “the love of a stranger.”
Alongside our colleagues at Shorefast and our sister social businesses, we show that it’s possible for local communities to thrive in the global economy. We are excited by the ‘’beautiful trouble” that a fiercely impassioned team of pragmatic, curious dreamers and changemakers can create.
We’ve built a team of people committed to innovating, disturbing the norms, and continuing to exemplify our social purpose.
Maybe this is a place for you?
To use the language of the hospitality industry, we are looking for a Food & Beverage Director. But this role is about so much more than food and so much more than beverages. Its about care and conviviality and community. We could call you the Director of Conviviality. Or Director of Doing the Right Things for the Right Reasons. We can work on the title together.
The Position:
Based on Fogo Island and working closely with Amanda Decker-Penton, the Managing Director of the Inn, the Food & Beverage Leader will be a member of the executive leadership team. You will add your energies, vision, experience, and ideas to a team that is globally recognized as leaders in shaping the future of community-based hospitality.
Our working relationships are deeply collaborative and include relationships with colleagues who lead other functional areas at the Inn, growers, fishers, artists, community members at large, guests and colleagues in sister social businesses.
The person in this F&B leadership role will lead a team that is responsible for delivering a world class food and beverage programme at our small but mighty 29 room Inn. The dining room, the lounge, the library, the tearoom, the crab shed, the hot tubs – all of the lovely handmade spaces in this architectural icon are your terrain. Since it opened in 2013 the Inn has been pushing the boundaries of innovation in architecture, design, business, service and foodways. We want to welcome an F&B leader and innovator who shares our mission and commitment to deepening and broadening our understanding and practices with the beautiful bounty that is foraged, farmed, and fished on and around our island that sits in the pristine waters of the Labrador Current. We want an F&B leader who likes creative challenge and enjoys the space and place to learn and evolve their own vision.
Yes, you will manage schedules, inventory, planning and budgeting; all the things that keep our business humming along properly. And of course, hiring, mentoring, managing people, implementing work processes and procedures – whatever is needed to create an environment of learning and mutual support; whatever is needed to make things more joyful and satisfying for all.
