Student, Closure Program Analyst
The Opportunity
We are looking for an enthusiastic post-secondary student to join our work in Liability Management at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). The successful candidate will support work with the Licensee Management Team and the Orphaning, Insolvency, and Legacy Team. This position will build the candidates knowledge and experience in managing oil and gas liabilities.
The Closure Program Analyst Summer Student will be part of a supportive, tight knit group of multi-disciplinary professionals who are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This four-month position will be directly involved with the establishment and review of closure spend targets from the Inventory Reduction Program, one of the key initiatives established by the new Liability Management Framework policy. This position will also support the ongoing management of licensee insolvencies and licensee working interest records. This work supports responsible energy development while holding licensees accountable to their regulatory and liability obligations.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Support data analysis and compliance activities with the Inventory Reduction Program, including reviewing and evaluating closure spend activities and data, compiling data from multiple sources and reports, verifying errors and corrections, liaising with licensees, supporting recommendations for leadership approval, and supporting the associated regulatory interventions.
- Review and correct working interest records on insolvent licensees.
- Review working interest participant responses and compliance with AER orders issued arising from insolvency.
- Support activities with working interest cost claims, including reviewing and evaluating submissions, compiling, and analyzing associated data, and supporting continual improvement projects.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in meetings and other enterprise initiatives to support continuous improvement.
- Provide support to Specialists, Advisors, and Managers within liability management.
Qualifications:
- 2nd or 3rd year student enrolled in an environmental science degree program or related field.
- Previous experience working in the oil and gas sector, preferably in closure activities (e.g., abandonment, remediation, reclamation) is an asset, but not required.
- Organized, detailed orientated, and self-motivated.
- Excellent communication skills; written, listening, and verbal.
Additional Requirements and Information:
- This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately 4 months.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered institution and returning to studies following this placement will be a condition of hire.
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
