Student, Data Management Analyst

The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has assessed and identified 77 master databases which form AER’s complex and dynamic data landscape. AER’s Data Management team has identified 327 databases as being active, and of those, 77 are considered critical master databases. We have an opportunity to utilize students to contribute to the first step toward AER’s Master Data Management vision for the future by identifying and documenting the current state master data ecosystem at a very high level.

Your Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze and categorize 77 master databases into major AER enterprise data subject domains based on AER’s business capabilities and function

• Develop and document a master data foundation

• Participate in stakeholder meetings, interviews, and verification processes to ensure information is validated by the data subject matter experts (SME)’s from the business area, including Information Management Technology

• Develop a very high-level conceptual master data flow diagram (DFD) and document primary and related systems and ETL processes. The documentation should include a brief description, host server name, high-level data flow processes and related sub-databases

• Support and assist in data management activities and tasks within various projects and initiatives. Also, the student will have an opportunity to work with some of the AER’s existing tools, such as ‘Octopai’ (data discovery and lineage tool) and ‘Azure Purview’ (data cataloging tool)

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a degree/diploma in Computer Science or related field

• Understand master data and the concept of master data management

• Able to explore data utilizing SQL server and SQL Management Studio

• Understand ETL

• Have a functional and technical understanding of one or more master data objects with respect to business capabilities

• Have a high level of self-motivation and initiative, be detail oriented and have strong analytical skills

Additional Requirements and Information:

• This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately 4 months

• Proof of enrollment in a registered institution and returning to studies following this placement will be a condition of hire

• All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application
