The Opportunity

As the newest addition in the Technical Science & External Innovation (TS&EI) branch, you will be a key member of the Economics team. As a Student, Economist, you will support many of the team’s core functions including economic analysis, data management, economic modeling, and regulatory impact assessments (RIAs).
Reporting to the Principal Economist, you will conduct economic research and contribute to data analysis. You will participate in reporting of energy and economic statistics and assist in updating and maintaining forecasting models. You will be involved in discussions on multidisciplinary issues and collaborate with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Your Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) experts to gather and compile data for Regulatory Impact Assessments (RIAs). Support other economists in modeling and presenting of estimated regulatory impacts.

• Report, write, and present historical data and modeled scenarios with support from senior staff. Learn and use inhouse models to assess social, environmental, and economic impacts of future resource development.

• Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining routine and simple economic and forecasting models. Verify the assumptions used in models to ensure models are defensible.

• Support senior staff in providing responses to routine and complex inquiries for energy information or insights on RIAs.

• Gather, update, and maintain high quality energy, environmental, social, and economic data for modeling, forecasting and RIAs.

• Support routine economic evaluations for asset transfers, and applications; collaborating with various internal and external stakeholders.

• Participate in preparing briefing notes and presentation materials to senior leadership.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in Bachelor or Master programs in economics, public policy, sociology, Indigenous studies, or business.

• Students in Bachelor program that have completed 2nd or 3rd year and Master students that are in their first year will be considered.

• Strong understanding of econometrics and statistics.

• Strong proficiency in MS Office suite.

• Strong oral and written communication and teamwork skills.

• Industry knowledge, and familiarity with evaluating environmental, social, and economic impacts.

• Familiarity with model building and cost benefit analysis.

Additional Requirements and Information:

• This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately 4 months.

• Proof of enrollment in a registered institution and returning to studies following this placement will be a condition of hire.

• All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
