The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) provides geological information and advice about the geology of Alberta to the Government of Alberta, AER, industry, and the public to support the exploration, sustainable development, regulation, and conservation of Alberta’s resources.
The primary objective of the Student, Geophysics, Seismology will be the maintenance and enhancement of AGS’ passive seismic monitoring network for earthquake detection across the province of Alberta. This role offers a balance of field work and office work, where the successful candidate will work directly with geoscientists from the Subsurface Geology and Geohazards team to plan and execute the 2023 Earthquake Monitoring Project field season. Additionally, where time permits, the Student, Geophysics may have the opportunity to support ongoing research projects and investigate cases of induced seismicity in Alberta. The role requires a fast learner that is passionate about teamwork and enjoys working outdoors.

Your Key Responsibilities:

• Assists with installation, maintenance and decommissioning of passive seismic monitoring stations throughout Alberta

• Applies foundational concepts and principles of geophysics to assist in the planning and execution of AGS’ Earthquake Monitoring Project

• Collaborates with staff geoscientists on AGS research projects and to investigate cases of induced seismicity in Alberta

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate geoscience studies with specialization in geophysics

• Has a foundational understanding of passive seismic monitoring, and familiarity with seismometers, accelerometers and simple electronics

• Past geological or geophysical field experience is considered an asset

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Geoscience

Additional Requirements and Information:

• This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately 4 months.

• Proof of enrollment in a registered institution and returning to studies following this placement will be a condition of hire.

• All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

• Standard First Aid/H2S Alive is considered an asset. Training provided as required.

• Travel of up to 1 to 2 weeks at a time to field sites may be required. Remote locations may require camping overnight with limited amenities.

• This role has a business requirement to work from Edmonton.

• Pre-placement Medical required.

• Possess a fully valid driver’s license along with a positive driving record. The word “fully” describes the criteria for a class 5 as opposed to a graduated license, and “positive driving record” as defined in the AER driving policy.
