The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for researching new technologies and business opportunities within the industry. The incumbent will also support the Cost Estimation and Sales teams by providing technical guidance/presentations and engineering support on active quotes and new business opportunities.
The Product Development Engineer will provide engineering support to internal and external teams with respect to new business opportunities and engineered solutions. The individual will take the lead role for researching and understanding new product technologies and manufacturing techniques, and applying them to business opportunities.
Product Development Engineer will be responsible for determining the best engineering approach to new business and will provide engineering input on all initial feasibilities.
The Engineer will work closely with the Sales team and customers to understand their applications and needs and work collaboratively or independently, to develop an approach to meet those needs. The Engineer will be responsible to develop, and present technical information both internally and to customers.
Where does the Product Development Engineer fit in?
· Benchmarks existing parts and processes
· Research new technologies, materials, and processes to understand their benefits, limitations, and required investment
· Complete and present business plans and ROI calculations to management
· Identify, develop and suggest improvements for margin and or function of parts and assemblies both new and existing
· Interact with customers and suppliers to identify needs and provide solutions
· Review customer source packages to determine functional, quality, and system requirements. Disseminate information to the appropriate teams and gather feedback accordingly. Record, track and resolve any open issues.
· Ensure planned approach meets both customer requirements and internal targets
· Prepare supplier RFQs (Request for Quote) based on internal and customer requirements
· Develop and present technical information and solutions to internal, as well as customer teams. Justify cost and approach as required.
· Coordinate and collaborate with internal teams (Cost estimation & Sales teams) as required to determine best practice approach
· Support sales meetings and all tech reviews
· Provide engineering input for DFM, EMP, QP and initial feasibilities
· Review part and assembly GD&T. Identify issues and work with customers to resolve
· Plan and manage trials of new technologies and processes
· Provide customers with technical and engineering support during new part development
Ensures compliance to IATF-16949 systems and procedures
Do you have what is takes to be our next Product Development Engineer?
· Post-secondary degree in Engineering or related field
· Minimum 5 to 10 years’ experience in engineering, program/project management (within the automotive industry)
· Impeccable oral and written communication & presentation skills, with the ability to interface with senior management
· Strong relationship building skills (internal & external stakeholders)
· Customer advocate- able to effectively communicate client needs to the organization simultaneously balancing organizational requirements
· Proactive view to identifying & driving financial benefits for our clients
· Proven successful launches of previous programs (on time & on budget)
· Ability to think & execute strategically and is results oriented
· Self-motivated individual with a strong attention to detail
· Develop long-term strategies for key accounts that align with corporate mandate
· Proficient with MS Project
· Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi task as required
· Experience in injection molding, manufacturing or related field is required
· Experience as a Tier 1 Automotive supplier is an asset
· Cost analysis / quoting experience is an asset
