SAFETY MANAGER, SOUTH

You are a Marine Safety expert, and your goal is to ensure best safety practices and procedures are followed throughout BC Ferries’ operations. You have a supportive mindset and understand that education and mentoring are critical and valued aspects of modern and effective safety management.
Your primary responsibility is the implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS) in the South Coast region. Reporting to the Director, Safety Management System, you will oversee safety reporting, support the Initial Assessment Report (IAR) investigation process, conduct operational risk assessments and evaluations and provide safety guidance to the fleet and executive.
In support of worksites in your region, you will provide Quality Assurance and Quality Control for SMS processes and policy. You will facilitate regularly scheduled SMS training and provide individual support to worksite teams in your region. You are a resourceful self-starter, process and support oriented, and are capable and motivated to proactively research and solve problems – acute, short and long term.
You have strong communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to cultivate effective working relationships; as collaboration with a wide variety of operational teams will be key to your success.
Your working knowledge of the following are required to be successful in the role:
SMS processes (reporting, investigations, risk assessments, risk management, safety policies)
The ISM Code
Incident Command System
WorkSafeBC regulations, The Canada Shipping Act
Human Factors
You bring a minimum of five years’ Marine or Safety operational experience (ship or shore). Valuable backgrounds/designations include: Marine, Engineering or Deck Certificates of competency, Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, Diploma/Certificates in Risk Management (CRM) or Occupational Health and Safety (OSH). A combination of education and/or experience in any of the above that demonstrates proficiency in marine Safety practices is acceptable.
