The Population and Public Health (PPH) Division focuses on improving people’s overall health and well-being by promoting health; preventing disease, disability, and injury; protecting people from harm; and ensuring particular focus on key groups including Indigenous peoples, women and children. The intent of these actions is to promote a healthier population and reduce current and future demands on the health care system.
PPH business areas fulfill their work through the development of strategic policy; planning, directing/influencing and/or evaluating, policies, programs and legislation; providing leadership and expert advice based on evidence and best practices; and by building partnerships with key stakeholders.
The Healthy Living and Health Promotion Branch works to reduce the incidence of preventable chronic disease and injury by addressing risk factors and supporting health-promoting environments that enable British Columbians to make healthy lifestyle choices. The branch is responsible for population health and wellness strategies related to: healthy eating and food security, physical activity, healthy weights, injury prevention, healthy built environments, aging well, and reduced harms associated with tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis, use as well as gambling. As a key element of an overall strategy to improve population health, the branch supports clinical prevention across the life course. The branch also supports population health promotion strategies in settings, including schools, local communities and in the workplace. To support this work, the branch also incorporates social marketing through its HealthyBC brand, and provides governance and procurement oversight over contracts and/or grants with non-government organizations and others.
The Director, Strategic Planning and Marketing provides branch support for all internal corporate business planning initiatives, including representing branch interests in Ministry Service and internal business planning; leads branch input into PPH divisional planning and is responsible for ensuring branch plans are current and aligned to support Ministry, Division and Government priorities. The position leads strategic projects for the branch involving both public and private sector organizations with the goal of improving people’s overall health and well-being. The position also provides expertise and oversight on social marketing and citizen engagement activities by creating tools, applying incentives, fostering collaboration and partnerships, developing and managing key engagement channels and digital assets and maintaining trusted, credible content for the Population and Public Health Division and the Ministry of Health. This role provides in house support to build comprehensive prevention marketing strategies across all platforms both on and offline. Additionally, the Unit manages the Ministry’s HealthyBC brand by leveraging digital assets and creating a synergistic approach to engagement to support health education and health advocacy.
