Join our team in Victoria, BC as a Senior Counsel and play a key role in ensuring the financial security of thousands of British Columbians through your expert legal guidance.
As a Senior Counsel, you will be responsible for drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and providing high quality legal advice relating to corporate governance and policies, client relations, technology and data agreements, regulatory matters, board deliverables, freedom of information issues, and general corporate and operational legal issues.
The successful candidate will work with team members, other departments, and external advisors on strategic, complex, time-sensitive issues, managing risk and enabling initiatives in a pragmatic, business-friendly, but prudent manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have:

A Law degree (LL.B. or J.D.)
-
Called or qualified to be called to the bar of British Columbia

Broad exposure to corporate matters and commercial agreements
-
A minimum of seven (7) years’ related experience, including time spent as internal counsel at a large institution or at a leading law firm
Preferred:
-
Experience with service contracts, consulting arrangements and technology agreements
-
Experience with corporate governance, procurement, and privacy issues
-
Exposure to the investment industry
-
Exposure to pension, trust or tax law
-
Experience with statutory entities and government agency status
ROLE SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
-
Work closely with other departments, providing legal advice and support for medium to high-impact corporate, and general operational activities
-
Participate in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, such as IT agreements, master agreements, service agreements, fund management agreements and non-disclosure agreements and provide advice on ongoing compliance with terms and conditions

Perform legal research and provide guidance on contractual, legal, regulatory and governance requirements

Provides advice on the impact of BCI activities on regulatory framework, statutory obligations, and legal obligations

Identifies legal and regulatory risks, working with others to appropriately manage or mitigate those risks within BCI’s business environment and commercial strategies

Build relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders

Anticipate and foresee legal and business risks specific to own area of expertise and business risk tolerance

Evaluate issues accurately and escalate appropriately

Makes decisions, forms strategy, and executes independently with minimal supervision

Resolve complex issues within areas of expertise and experience

Approach work with an understanding of how it relates to long-term objectives and strategies of the legal department and BCI’s long term investment horizon
