Department: Thrift Shops Hours of Work: 20 hrs/weekly for 12 weeks
Location: Victoria, Brentwood, Sidney or 10 hrs/week for 24 weeks.Hours between
8:30 am-5:00 pm (Mon-Sat)
Compensation: Status: Temporary, Part-time (12 or 24 week
Weekly stipend: 12 week term: $313/ week. placement or until required 240 hours
24 week term: $156.50/week.($15.65 per hour) completed)
Union: Exempt
Start Date: As soon as possible Posting Period: Until September 2, 2022
ABOUT BEACON:
Beacon Community Services is a well-established local charity operating in the Greater Victoria
area for over 45 years. We are an award –winning and accredited organization that helps people
and improves lives through a range of community programs and services than span every phase
of people’s lives. Beacon operates seven Thrift Shops throughout the CRD and 100% of sthe
funds generated at our thrift shops support local community programs. We serve Southern
Vancouver Island and the outer Gulf Islands with a team around 200 staff and 600 volunteers.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Thrift Shop Manager, the Thrift Shop Assistant will assist volunteers and staff in
a variety of duties including sorting, pricing, display, cashier, and customer service skills. These
positions are funded through the Work Experience Opportunities Grant program and have
specific requirements for applicants to qualify as detailed below. The Ministry will verify the
eligibility of all prospective participants prior to the start of the work experience opportunity.
Organizations may not begin work placement activities until participant status has been
confirmed by the Ministry.
All positions are 12 week temporary placements. We are looking for a self-motivated,
enthusiastic individuals to join our team.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide a safe and supportive work environment for volunteers, customers and staff
Working with volunteers, donors, and public of all ages and socio-economic groups
Assist with all aspects of Thrift Shop operations including:
o Accepting, sorting, and pricing incoming donations
o Provide customers with assistance
o Operate cash register and handle sales
o Display items and stock shop
o Dusting, cleaning, organizing
Ensure COVID-19 safety protocols are in place for the safety of volunteers, customers,
donors and staff
Performs tasks assigned by Thrift Shop Manager
Assists the public with general inquiries
Responds to emergencies such as accidents and fire alarms.
Responsible for following safe work policies and procedures and reporting unsafe work
conditions, near misses, hazards and injuries.
Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified to receive assistance under the Employment and Assistance Act; or
Qualified to receive assistance under the Employment and Assistance for Persons with
Disabilities Act; or
Qualified to receive assistance from a Treaty First Nation that is funded through the
Federal Department of Crown–Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada; or
Qualified to receive assistance from a First Nation Administering Authority that administers
an Income Assistance Program on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada.
