Description
The Staff Fire Protection Engineer will assist in the design work on multi-discipline projects and assist in the preparation of comprehensive fire protection packages including fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke management, and life safety. Under direct supervision, the Staff Fire Protection Engineer will provide evaluations for new and/or existing life safety programs, assist in the construction administration process, and travel to the client sites as necessary.
Design and specify wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, and deluge fire suppression systems supported by domestic infrastructure, fire pumps, and storage tanks on a wide variety of project types.
Perform and review hydraulic and fire alarm calculations.
Design and specify conventional and addressable fire alarm systems which incorporate voice evacuation and mass notification.
Evaluate fire safety hazards and life safety requirements including egress, area and height limitations, building type, fire-resistive construction, occupancy classification, and smoke management.
Assist in the construction administration process including review of contractor shop drawings, field inspection, and testing and commissioning.
Assist field personnel in resolving design-related installation issues. Apply sound fire protection engineering principles to troubleshoot and solve client-related problems.
Qualifications
Candidate shall have a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in fire protection engineering or related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university.
Minimum 3 years related experience (completion of master’s degree in fire protection engineering may be substituted for one year of experience).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
Candidate should have a working knowledge of appropriate design tools such as hydraulic calculation software, AutoCAD or Revit, Excel, and Word. The position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving challenging problems requiring adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures or criteria.
NICET certification, Certified Fire Protection Specialist accreditation, and experience working with military standards are strongly preferred.
Professional Fire Protection Engineer (P.E.) license strongly preferred.
