Job Summary:
As a member of the Senior Executive Team, the Director, People & Wellness for CMHA Ontario will lead the development of best-in-class HR policies, procedures, and programs. The Director, People & Wellness will champion the vision, mission, and values leading a wide range of Human Resource functions both for CMHA Ontario and the 28 CMHA branches across Ontario.
The Director, People & Wellness will have overall responsibility for employee relations, performance management, training and development, and succession planning for CMHA Ontario. They will also be responsible for recruitment and employee retention working within a unionized office environment. Additionally, this position will provide services in the areas of information technology and corporate services, including purchasing; health and safety; facility management; information and records management; and governance support.
For the 28 CMHA branches in Ontario, the Director, People & Wellness will provide support, share best practices, and encourage collaboration acting as the Human Resource “Hub” for the independently run HR teams.
Core Responsibilities:
The Director, People & Wellness will provide advice to the Chief Executive Officer, CMHA Ontario to ensure excellence in the following areas:
Managing human resources planning, development, and recruitment for CMHA Ontario.
Fostering a psychologically safe environment for all employees, with emphasis on mental wellness and wellbeing.
Maintaining a robust and relevant performance evaluation system.
Evaluating and developing strategic and thoughtful professional development opportunities for each staff person annually.
Executing corporate service functions including up-to-date record keeping and file management.
Providing leadership in the negotiation and management of the Collective Agreement.
Providing oversight of all IT functions, with responsibility for maintenance and planning (IT expert reports into this position).
Managing multiple direct reports.
The Director, People & Wellness will also provide human resource expertise across the sector to CMHA branches on:
Managing and negotiating Collective Agreements.
Recruiting the most competent staff to deliver programs and serve clients across the province. Assisting branches with recruitment where requested, communicating agreed upon best practices in this process.
Conducting human resources planning and asset mapping as a result of an integration.
Developing and engaging a network of peers across branches engaged in human resources issues and management for the purposes of sharing information and best practices.
Sharing vital and timely information to assist our branches and partners in ensuring the mental health and wellness of employees and demonstrating psychologically safe environments in our branches across Ontario.
Responding to requests from board volunteers regarding the recruitment of their most senior staff person in each branch by communicating sound practices and procedures.
Additional general duties supporting CMHA Ontario include:
Identifying and managing budgetary requirements of the People & Wellness department ensuring accounting and audit procedures are followed.
Fostering an environment for effective communication and providing ongoing support, direction, and counsel to staff in order to develop their communication skills to perform their jobs effectively and efficiently.
Protecting and promoting the CMHA Brand at all times by ensuring that personal and divisional activities reflect the national mental health brand image.
Actively participating in Senior Management meetings, committee meetings, and volunteer groups as required and representing CMHA Ontario as a knowledgeable source of information within assigned areas of responsibility.
Participating and representing HR in strategic business plan development and on-going business meetings/decisions with business line leaders.

Skills & Experience:
10+ years of experience with a minimum of 5 years in a senior HR leadership role.
Degree or Diploma in Human Resources Management.
CHRP/CHRL designation.
Proven work experience in a broad range of human resource management functions including organizational & position design, recruitment, job evaluation, training and development, salary, pension, and benefits administration, performance management, and employee relations.
Sound knowledge of all relevant labour legislation and experience working in a unionized environment.
Sound knowledge of records management programs and administrative and IT systems and processes to ensure easy retrieval of association information and effective and efficient use of office support equipment, software, and services.
An achievement-oriented practitioner with exposure to varied and diverse organizational environments and experiences.
A leader with a “best-practices” philosophy coupled with the ongoing pursuit of continuous improvement.
Exceptional communication skills (written, verbal, listening).
Strong knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles and best practices.
Demonstrated strategic influencing skills. Ability to initiate dialogue and discussion with, and to gain feedback from, various internal and external stakeholders.
Working Conditions:
This is a full-time position working standard office hours (currently 35 hours/week). This position is based in Toronto, Ontario and may require regular travel. (Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, colleagues are working primarily virtually. No work travel is currently permitted.)
This position is also a desk job with extended periods of sitting, reading, telephone/virtual interaction, and working at the computer. This position involves some moderate lifting, shipping, and handling. Attendance at various meetings throughout the workday/workweek and occasional weekends will be required; meetings may occur on short notice, depending on the circumstances.
As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to maintain and submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.
