Job Summary
The Learning and Development Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing company-wide training solutions linked to CN’s policies and programs as well as providing leadership and professional development solutions.
Main Responsibilities
Learning, Training and Development
- Advise functional managers on appropriate learning, training and development solutions for business and operational needs ensuring that functions have a qualified and capable workforce to support business goals and meet regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with clients to assess business needs and performance gaps
- Identify and scope system-wide development initiatives aligned with business strategies, priorities and resource requirements (Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), instructors, outside developers, external experts) that align to budget
- Lead training development projects, from scoping and analysis to implementation, for learning, training and development solutions including instructor-led, e-learning, webinars, blended learning, and job aids
- Contract external suppliers, plan for SMEs and track progress to plan
- Ensure product quality such as accuracy, completeness, learning effectiveness, and track deliverables and expenses against contract
- Evaluate solutions for effectiveness in the learning setting, transfer to job, and value
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in a flexible remote and office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines. The role requires minimal travel (5%) within Canada and the United States.
Requirements
Experience
Training and Development
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role
o Experience designing and developing training aligned with business needs
o Experience handling complex and multiple projects simultaneously
o Experience using training technologies and tools
o Stakeholder management experience
o Project Management experience
o Vendor Management experience*
- Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Education, or equivalent
- Graduate Studies (adult education, educational technology or equivalent)*
- Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Organizational Impact

The Learning and Development Advisor is responsible for making recommendations on course content. The role has impacts on leadership and leaders’ technical abilities in completing the course under the incumbent’s responsibility. The position is accountable for supporting talent development by building appropriate developmental actions.
Level of Interaction/Influence
The Learning and Development Advisor interacts with individuals internal and external to CN. Within the organization, the incumbent liaises with SME from various functions such as individual contributors, First Line Supervisors, Middle Managers, Directors and Vice-Presidents, Human Resources Business Partners, Campus Instructors, and Human Resource Information System team members. Outside of CN, the role communicates with various firms and developers.
Employees Supervised/Organizational Structure
The Learning and Development Advisor reports to the Manager of Learning and Development and has no supervisory responsibility.
