Job status: Temporary full-time 1.0 FTE (75 hours bi-weekly).

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Medical Director, the Statistician and Health Care Researcher undertakes statistical analysis for program planning and supports research activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Statistics

• Conducts data analysis, data management, and collaborates with other team members to help them move their projects forward using population-based administrative data. Works with the raw data to build analyzable datasets (cleaning, compiling and variable assembly), statistical analysis, production of tables and figures for manuscripts.

• Liaising with the data stewards and PopData BC to access, maintain, and analyze highly secure data. Completing and filing data amendment requests as directed.

• Collaborates with data scientists at other institutions to support data collection, analysis and reporting relevant to CPCH projects

Heath Care Research

• Attends meetings to define strategies, goals and scope of research projects, Reports on project progress in research, evaluation and knowledge translation.

• As part of the Canuck Place Research Initiative, collaborates with BC Children’s Hospital based researchers in Pediatric Palliative Care. Joins lab meetings, contributes to ideas, and provides material support for projects.

• May support research design and methodology for assigned projects by researching the assigned topic; determining appropriate and available resources; participating in determining the data required; developing monitoring and modifying systems/tools for collection; verification and reporting of data.

• Liaises with researchers from academic institutions who wish to undertake research studies at CPCH. Acts as the main point of contact and confirms their compliance with all relevant policies and procedures.

• Other expectations include assisting with UBC research ethics applications, and monitoring compliance with ethics and privacy requirements.

• Supports the Research Initiative by preparing draft agendas for meetings, taking and distributing minutes, bringing forward items, researching and compiling information as requested. Tracks and prepares the annual research and knowledge dissemination report for Quality Council.

• Facilitates knowledge dissemination of research projects by organizing education sessions and coordinating with the Education Committee and/or Nurse Educator.

• Participating in drafting reports, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations and other knowledge dissemination activities. Collaborates with local, national and international colleagues.
  

Program Evaluation

• May work with the Program Analyst in helping to meet the strategic priorities of providing quality palliative care, research and knowledge dissemination/education and extension of services. This assistance will be provided at the direction of the Medical Director and will mostly be in advanced data analysis and interpretation.

• Perform other related duties, as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree or above in Health, Statistics, Research, Psychology, Education, or a related field, supplemented with a minimum of three years recent related experience in research and analysis; or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

QUALIFICATIONS

What you bring to the role:

• Evidence of superior understanding of statistics

• Evidence of high-level coding skills in “R” and /or SAS

• Evidence of of quantitative health research experience

• Evidence of understanding of qualitative health research

• Knowledge of ethics review board and privacy requirements

• Experience using PopData BC’s Secure Research Environment would be an asset

• Ability to collect, analyse, extract, interpret, organize and summarize statistical and narrative data

• Ability to present results, conclusions and recommendations in graphic and written form

• Excellent project management, teamwork, organizational and interpersonal skills

• Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

• Ability to work diplomatically and persuasively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with various groups at all levels

• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities

High level of attention to detail and accuracy

• Proven problem solving, analytical and decision making skills

• Ability to prioritize work and work under pressure

• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software application

Note: Flexibility is necessary, as this position may require occasional weekend and evening work and travel within and outside the Lower Mainland.
