Student Parent Support Worker (SPSW)

Salary: $22.05.00/hr. Hours of Work: 37.5 weekly

Overview
Chebucto Connections is a community development agency focused on addressing our community’s most urgent social issues. We provide a variety of programs and services aimed at poverty, social isolation and education. Our Pathways to Education program is focused on increasing graduation rates in our community to break the cycle of poverty. Reporting to the Pathways to Education Manager, the Student Parent Support Worker (SPSW) plays an essential role for the facilitation and success of the Pathways to Education Program.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
· Maintain positive and supportive relationships with students and families in grades 9 through 12.
· Understand the educational strengths and challenges faced by participants.
· Refer individual students and their parents/guardians to other agencies when appropriate.
· Work with the Program Coordinators to support and supervise volunteers during programming
· Help to organize and develop any needed resources and handouts for programs.
· Support student academic success through meetings with students, teachers and parents.
· Respond to incidents or crisis and build youth capacity to advocate for themselves and their peers.
· Facilitate health curriculum sessions with youth.
· Support activities, programs and other events related to the program.
Qualifications
· Relevant combination of experience and University (preferred) education in Education, Community Development or Social Sciences.
· Experience working with diverse populations of youth, one-on-one and in groups.
· Detail oriented with excellent organizational, written and presentation skills.
· Exceptional verbal communication skills and able to thoughtfully and effectively communicate with staff, volunteers and the public.
· A minimum of 2 years’ experience facilitating groups of youth.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable working with databases.
· Ability to set priorities, manage time and workloads and work in a team setting.
· Knowledge of community and social service resources that support youth and families is an asset.
Requirement:
A criminal record check and child abuse registry check are a condition of employment.
Staff are required to wear masks when dealing with clients/students. Rapid testing kits and cleaning supplies on-site.
