Location
This position is temporarily working remotely due to COVID-19 for an undetermined period. Once our offices re-open you will be based out of City Hall, 426 Brant Street, Burlington, ON. This position may be eligible for a hybrid working arrangement. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Supervisor of Traffic Operations the Traffic Technologist is responsible for investigating and responding to inquiries and complaints regarding traffic operations and road safety, coordinating the delivery of departmental programs, and providing technical expertise through the review and approval of various road projects and road use applications.
Responsibilities
The Traffic Technologist will be responsible for:

• Reviewing and providing comments on design drawings, development proposals, site plans and construction staging plans and recommends requirements for traffic signs, pavement markings, detour routes, safety improvements and overall impacts to the road network.
• Performing various field studies, observations and analysis to assess current conditions and identifies, recommends and implements a variety of improvements related to traffic control devices, road user safety and efficiency of the city’s road network.
• Conducting site investigations and inspections to ensure traffic control devices are in compliance with legislation, standards, guidelines, by-laws and other approved plans and permits and takes action to remedy when required.
• Overseeing contracted work programs through assisting in the development of contract documents, planning, coordinating and directing the work of contractors, ensuring work meets contract specifications, confirming quantities for payment and maintaining related inventories and records.
• Preparing correspondence, committee reports and data summaries in response to traffic operational issues and inquiries received from the public, Mayor and members of Council, internal staff and external agencies.
• Planning, coordinating and executing the delivery of departmental programs including data collection and management, road safety initiatives, asset and inventory management and other programs and initiatives as required.
• Reviewing and administering road use permits including reviewing related traffic control plans, routing and signage proposals to ensure proper traffic operations and public safety. Provides approvals and conditions through the issuance of a permit including liaising with various stakeholders.
• Administering and managing collision analysis software including data input and quality assurance, preparing reports and summaries and facilitating software updates as required.
• Organizing, leading and attending public meetings and providing information related to traffic operational issues on behalf of the city and department.

Requirements
The successful applicant will have at least four years of related work experience in addition to a College Diploma or University Degree in Transportation Engineering (or suitable equivalent). Excellent communication, organizational and diplomacy skills are essential. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Additionally, the incumbent will be proficient in Microsoft Office and possess a demonstrated knowledge of related traffic engineering practices. Experience with traffic calming, road safety reviews, traffic flow and capacity analysis, as well as, holding a Certified Engineering Technologist, Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer designation are desirable assets. Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Driver’s License.
This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.
