Are you passionate about ecology and open space and interested in supporting the Open Space team at the City of Edmonton?
The City’s Open Space Unit leads the development of open space strategy and planning review, and provides expertise in the field of ecological and open space planning. As a member of the Open Space Unit, the co-op student will support unit priorities. Specifically, the student will support the development of an ecological database, by cataloguing and mapping information within existing reports. Other projects may include open space research and analysis, planning and policy review, and potentially field work and site visits. You will succeed in this role if you are a creative thinker and problem solver, and can achieve results in a respectful, inclusive and service-minded way.
Responsibilities include:
Review, catalogue, and extract information from the City’s existing natural area and river valley ecological reports. These include, but are not limited to, Ecological Network Reports, Natural Area Management Plans, and Environmental Impact Assessments
Support the translation of ecological database information into a spatial environment (preferably GIS)
Conduct research and develop recommendations on a variety of urban ecology, recreation, and other open space planning topics
Support the review of open space and ecology planning applications and policies
Assist with the City’s Natural Area Systems Monitoring Program as requested, this may include field work
Conduct research and analysis of parks and ecological planning to inform parks and river valley strategy and recommendations
Make presentations to colleagues, the public, and other stakeholders
Perform other related duties as required
Note: This position can be either based in office, or as a hybrid with time in office and at home. The position is primarily desk based although there may be summer field work components.
Qualifications :
Currently enrolled in an environmental science, ecology, geography, or urban planning co-op or equivalent post-secondary work experience degree program
Candidates with a demonstrated interest in open space planning, ecological and/or natural area studies will be given preference
Access to reliable internet while working from home
Demonstrated ability using Google Workspace applications
Ability to walk for several hours in natural terrain within Edmonton to conduct field work
Ability to perform assigned tasks and duties outdoors in all weather and environmental conditions safely
Excellent organizational skills with proven attention to detail
Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain strong working relationships
Familiarity with the principles and practices of urban and regional planning
Familiarity with principles and practices of ecology and conservation sciences
Familiarity with GIS and spatial mapping, particularly ArcGIS software

Ability to arrange own transportation (e.g. personal vehicle, public transit, etc.)
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) is considered an asset. May be required to arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday. The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
Salary: $21.545 – $25.135 (Hourly)
