The Transit Fleet and Facilities Maintenance team provides safe, reliable, efficient, timely and cost-effective transit vehicle maintenance services to support federally regulated transit services within the City of Ottawa.
Reporting to a Superintendent, Maintenance Services, you are responsible to develop job skills to the journeyperson level as an apprentice Truck and Coach Technician, under the guidance and direction of more experienced workers in the trade. You develop and apply learned job skills through a combination of on-the-job learning and in-class instruction.
Apprentices shall be trained in accordance with the prescribed apprenticeship program of the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, wherever compatible with City requirements and facilities. The City provides the Apprentice with a workplace, but Apprentices are required to comply with the Apprenticeship policies/procedures of the City of Ottawa, and the terms of the Apprenticeship Agreement that they sign with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, which is to meet the learning objectives, and master the skills of their trade.
As an apprentice, you will learn and apply skills to perform a wide range of duties of the trade, including, but not limited to, the following: conducting diagnostic inspection of buses, performing general mechanical overhaul and repair work to buses, and performing daily maintenance repairs to buses. You will: perform all unit changes or repairs to transmission, brakes, suspensions, electrical components, injectors, radiators, steering, differentials and air systems; and undertake major repairs to engines and transmissions as well as making miscellaneous adjustments to doors, destination signs and other vehicle systems.
Completion of Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship program of 7220 hours
Up to 1 year of practical, mechanical or machine shop experience in an automotive garage environment.
