Job Profile

The Living Prairie Museum Curator (LPMC) is responsible for the operation of the Living Prairie Museum. This includes managing staff and programming at the museum. They are responsible for upholding the mission statement of the Living Prairie Museum and providing ongoing direction. This position leads the development of quality educational activities and public events. They are responsible for the proper curation and collection of museum specimens and artifacts, while also leading stewardship activities that protect and maintain the living tall grass prairie habitat. The LPMC must have an expertise related to prairie ecosystems and be able to communicate this knowledge to residents, tourists, and staff, while working to maintain a positive public image for this unique City facility.

As the Living Prairie Museum Curator you will be responsible for:

• Administration, including supervision of staff, Museum Direction and managing partnerships
• Education/Outreach
• Biological Expert/Curator
• Habitat Management/Plant Propagation/Seed Production
• Media/Social Media

Your Education And Qualifications Include

• Undergraduate Degree in Biology, Ecology, Botany, Environmental Science or related degree.
• Experience working in natural habitats identifying species, sampling, controlling invasive species and monitoring habitats.
• Experience developing educational programs and presenting the programs.
• Experience developing, leading, and completing major projects and community events by applying for funding, financial tracking, managing contractors and volunteers, and reporting.
• Experience managing, designing and maintaining exhibits.
• Experience supervising, leading and training staff.
• Experience handling and managing cash flow.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, which allows for effective data basing, financial tracking, and outreach.
• Experience with design software such as InDesign for the creation and distribution of advertisements, newsletters, and exhibit design.
• Basic abilities in photography and editing that assist with the presentation of the prairie and museum activities.
• Experience using social media platforms, not only technically, but as an effective means of sharing information and creating a community of support.
• Specialized training in curatorial arts that allow for effective storage, care, labelling, and data sharing.
• A specialization in the identification of a class of living things pertaining to prairie ex. Flowering plants, grasses, insects, birds.
• Skilled/experienced in public speaking and interpretive services.

Conditions Of Employment

• The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
• Must be available to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays, possibly at unusual hours (media requests).
• Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license. The successful candidate will be required to provide a valid Driver’s Notice In Force letter.
• Must be physically fit to work outdoors on variable terrain or in seasonal conditions, including occasionally lifting weights of up to 20 lbs.
• A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the applicant(s) or successful candidate(s), at their expense.
