DUTIES: The primary assignment of the successful candidate will be to instruct students, facilitate learning and evaluate student progress by planning, organizing, and managing learning activities and resources. The instructor will incorporate their own teaching style to existing lesson plans by preparing and implementing various instructional strategies, techniques, and learning models to achieve specified learning outcomes and meet course objectives; establish student performance objectives and evaluation methods and meet with students regularly to gauge and evaluate progress and identify and resolve problem areas in teaching and learning; communicate effectively at a level appropriate to the ability of students and support an emotionally safe learning environment that is conducive to learning by maintaining appropriate classroom discipline following College policies and procedures; and actively participate in and contribute to accreditation activities to ensure the program is of the highest standard. The instructor will be primarily responsible for teaching competencies required to design, implement and maintain software systems to learners enrolled in Software Development programs. Coursework will include current computer programming language and concepts, object oriented programming, SOL programming, security for programmers, relational database design and development, systems analysis, website and internet application development, UNIX and Windows operating systems, Linux server administration, team building, ethics, and best practices as assigned by the administrator responsible for these programs.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess an extensive knowledge of the information technology field as it relates to software development/programming. An understanding of current teaching/learning methods and classroom management is also required. Well-developed oral and written communication, analytical, conflict resolution, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a teaching environment are essential. You must also have a strong commitment to student success strategies and initiatives. The required knowledge and skills would normally have been acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology or equivalent degree with specialization in software development/programming supplemented with a minimum of 4 years’ recent, relevant professional work experience. Alternatively, a Diploma in Software Development or equivalent from an accredited institution with relevant industry certification in the area of instruction and a minimum of 4 years’ recent, relevant industry experience may be considered. A Bachelor of Education Degree (Secondary/Post-Secondary), eligibility for membership in an appropriate professional association, along with teaching experience at the post-secondary level will be considered assets. Training in Desire2Learn and teaching experience in an online learning environment would also be considered assets.
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with College of the North Atlantic Faculty Collective Agreement.
