We are currently seeking a Health & Safety Professional to join our corporate management team for a 12–18 month contract. Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for overseeing occupational health and safety for unionized and management staff across eight worksites. Primary responsibilities include overseeing Joint Health and Safety Committees, conducting workplace violence and harassment investigations, and acting as an advisor to all managers company wide. Although this role has a strong focus on health and safety, the Health & Safety Coordinator must also have a working knowledge of training and development/adult learning principles, disability management, recruitment and selection, and labour relations.
JOB DUTIES
· Educate and train staff as it relates to health and safety including the creation of training material for corporate orientation, and health and safety topics.
· Provide guidance and direction to administrators and managers related to health and safety issues including incident/accident investigations and workplace violence and harassment investigations.
· Conduct workplace violence and harassment as required.
· Assist with WSIB claim submission and case management as required
· Ensures compliance with all Ministry of Labour initiatives.
· Have working knowledge of the Ministry of Labour requirements as it relates to critical incident reporting and occupational illness reporting.
· Coach, mentor and advise seven Joint Health and Safety Committees by participating in committee meetings (either by phone or in person) and providing ongoing training and development to each committee. Review JHSC meeting minutes.
· Assist in the maintenance and implementation of health and safety policies and procedures which include ongoing revisions of the health and safety manual.
· Conduct health and safety inspections at each facility ensuring compliance with our policies and legislation.
· Organize outsourced health and safety training (JHS Certification, First Aid, etc.).
· Participate in management meetings (Admin/DOC/ADOC, FSNM, REC Director) by providing health and safety information, training, education and updates.
· Participate in labour relations grievances and meetings with the unions at each facility as they relate to health and safety issues.
· Participate in labour negotiations as part of the management team as it relates to health and safety (including creating, reviewing and revising health and safety language for the various collective agreements).
· Interpret regulations, legislation and company policies as they relate to health and safety including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act.
· Assists in the identification of potential risks from a health and safety perspective.
· A moderate amount travel between worksites across Southern Ontario (Fort Erie, Niagara Falls and Burlington) is required.
· Other duties as required within the Human Resources department
REQUIREMENTS
· A University degree or College diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Human Resources, or another related field or equivalent is required.
· 2-5 years of experience in Human Resources, Health & Safety, or an equivalent combination of other experience and education is required.
· Membership with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals or Human Resources Professionals Association in good standing is preferred.
· Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification required.
· Working knowledge of relevant legislation: Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Ontario Employment Standards Act (ESA), and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
· Knowledge of adult learning principles.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact with staff, residents, families, community professionals and various outside partners
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word/Excel/Power Point)
· Ability to manage multiple, competing deadlines.
· A valid G class driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
