The Personal Support Worker is accountable to the Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nurse to assist residents in adequately performing activities of daily living and to perform specific intervention from individual resident care plans, while at the same time working closely with the Inter-disciplinary Health Care Team.
Background/ Qualifications :
Must be a graduate of an approved Personal Support Worker course or equivalent as stipulated in the LTCHA, 2007 47 (1).
Experience in Long Term Care setting an asset
Ability to work well with others in a team approach, and adapt to changing situations
Physically capable of performing assigned duties within a flexible work schedule inside a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation
Ability to meet and maintain health requirement as per Long Term Care Legislation.
Good physical and mental health. Demonstrates maturity and tactfulness.
Must be able to communicate in English including written documentation. Has an acceptable standard of behavior and appearance.
Genuine interest in and concern for residents.

Job Duties :
· Assist with all aspects of personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
· Provide services to residents including transferring, lifting, bathing, feeding, and personal care
· Ensure all documentation is completed through Point of Care or other home specific documentation format.
· Maintains a professional manner at all times in the performance of duties
· Protect and promote the welfare, dignity, and individual rights of our residents at all times
· Adhere to the goals, policies, and aims of APANS in all professional activities
· Provide each resident with meaningful companionship, observation, safety and conservation
· Participate in the rehabilitative approach to resident care
· Ensure the resident’s surroundings and personal effects are clean, tidy and serviceable
· Employ safe work practices at all times
· Answer call bells
· Perform other duties related to resident care as requested or directed.
· Report or record fluid intake and output
· Collect specimens such as urine, feces or sputum
· Make beds and maintain residents’ rooms
· Clean or sterilize equipment as per policy and procedure.
· Assemble, setup and operate job-related equipment
· Assists in escorting residents to specific programs and activities.
· Promotes effective Infection Control measures for self, residents and others.
· Participates in educational opportunities and in-services.
· Participates in the interdisciplinary care conferences, provides information to assist in the formulation of a comprehensive plan of care for each resident.
· Maintains effective communication and good human relations with residents, families and fellow staff using the appropriate lines of communication. (Works co-operatively with families, including them in resident care needs.)
· Directs all inquiries regarding residents care and conditions to the Charge Nurse.
· Assists in the training, guiding and supporting new staff through the orientation period.
· Assists in maintaining a safe environment for residents and staff by following safety policies and procedures and reporting hazardous situations in the appropriate manner. Performs pre-start-up inspections as required
Working Conditions :
· May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to the AIDS and hepatitis B viruses.
· Interacts with residents, family members, staff, visitors and government agencies.
· Overtime as required.
· Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting residents.
Physical Requirements :
Lifting alone, maximum 50 lbs., (5-25 lbs. Usual)
Lifting with assistance, maximum 160 lbs. (100-150 lbs. usual) as a minor job function.
Pushing/pulling, contents that weigh a maximum of 160 lbs., (100-125 lbs. Usual) as a minor activity.
Walking, with possibility of some upstairs walking, as a major job function.
Standing, for lengths of time, up to 3 hours maximum, (1-2 hrs. Usual) as a major job function.
Bending/stooping for short periods of time as a minor job function.
Crouching/kneeling for short periods of time as a minor job function.
Carries and transports objects of various sizes, to a maximum of 25 lbs., (5-15 lbs. usual) is a minor job function.
Health and Safety Responsibilities :
Is aware of the employees’ responsibilities and follows all health and safety policies and procedures as set out in the employee safety program handbook and departmental manuals.
Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers and residents.
Is alert to and promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations to immediate supervisor
Does not operate or use faulty equipment.
Wears personal protective equipment (or clothing) as required by task, M.S.D.S. or home policy.
Promptly reports personal injury to supervisor and seeks first aid as needed.
Participates in fire safety demonstrations and fire drills, and knows the home’s fire and disaster plan.
