Job Summary
Dalhousie Financial Services strives to provide the highest quality financial services and information to ensure the effective stewardship of University assets to the benefit of students and scholarly activities. Financial Services is a core service unit of the University, providing services in areas of financial accounting, budgeting, procurement and risk management, cash management, financial systems and policies, and the University’s endowment, pension and short term investment programs. Reporting to the Associate Director, Finance Operations, the Manager, Student Accounts is responsible for the management of the Student Accounts unit within Financial Services, and they will assist with the planning and organizing of the functions required to collect and properly account for tuition, residence, and other student fees.
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for the efficient day-to-day management of the operating section of the Student Accounts function, which includes ensuring monies are collected and disbursed in a timely manner, guiding accounting treatment, and ensuring cash received is appropriately secured, recorded, and prepared for deposit.
Oversees general collections procedures and policies. Monitors student receivable accounts, initiates collection activities where appropriate, and determines uncollectible accounts. Acts as main point of contact with collections company ensuring the Dalhousie’s needs are met, while maintaining a positive image for the University.
Identifies areas of control weakness or process issues and works with Associate Director to resolve. Reviews processes for efficiency and effectiveness and proposes changes as needed.
Resolves student account issues that are outside the scope of the clerical roles or have high potential impact to the institution. Facilitates and approves financial arrangements with students in alignment with approved payment schedules.
Works with stakeholders across campus responding to inquiries around tuition and fees, compiles fee schedules for posting on website, and coordinates with systems staff to test fee processes.
Manages a team of six clerical staff, along with temporary and student staff, ensuring that production schedules and scheduled work peaks are properly executed while maintaining a high level of student service.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in commerce or business administration, plus five years’ experience in a university or similar setting with strong accounting and some computing/system background (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. At least three years’ supervisory and management experience is required. High level interpersonal and teambuilding skills are required. Demonstration of good judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills are all essential to this role. The ability to anticipate student service needs is key.
