Durham College is seeking a proven leader with exceptional organizational, administrative and communication skills to join a team of professionals dedicated to promoting employee and student success. Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Human Resources, the Director, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will lead the ongoing development and implementation of proactive strategies and initiatives which support strategic and operational objectives in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion.
Working in a dynamic and multi-stakeholder environment, this role is responsible for developing, implementing and promoting policies, practices and programs conducive to fostering and creating an equitable environment where employees, students and visitors feel heard and welcome. The incumbent will be a trusted advisor and thought leader in their area of expertise and works closely with leadership and internal teams to provide guidance and training on EDI matters, initiatives and programs. The incumbent works with Student Affairs in support of student facing program delivery, and preparing funding grant applications. In addition, the incumbent represents Durham College in the community and builds relationships with a variety of external partners. This role is accountable for keeping up to date on EDI trends, legislation and case law and developing policy as well as educational resources, in support the college’s growth and commitment to enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion.
Specific areas of accountability include: management of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; overseeing and managing EDI programming directed to both employees and students, building strong relationships within the college and with the local community though a variety of initiatives, committees and partnerships; resolving concerns and complaints of harassment and discrimination through the application of college policy; overseeing the development and delivery of EDI training programs directed to students, employees, and managers; leading the college EDI working group and actioning results from Durham’s employee and student census survey.
The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, women’s studies, social work or a related discipline along with a minimum of 7 years of experience in progressively senior leadership positions which demonstrates the ability to effectively lead change, successfully communicate with a variety of individuals, on difficult and complex issues, and a solid understanding of the legal framework related to equity, diversity and inclusion. In addition, the ideal candidate will be a creative leader with a solid record of innovative problem solving; possess exceptional interpersonal, facilitation and mediation skills; have experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders, preferably in a unionized environment; sound judgement, tact and diplomacy; and the ability to manage multiple, competing and changing priorities. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in successfully resolving complex issues through coaching, negotiation and mediation, as well as experience with conducting formal investigations, preparing reports and participating in external hearing processes.
