Permanent, full-time opportunity
Through its “Ignite Learning” campaign, the Durham District School Board (DDSB) has outlined its strategic priorities, which include Success, Well-Being, Leadership, Equity, Engagement and Innovation. This is an exciting opportunity for the Construction Supervisor to contribute meaningfully to these priorities.
A qualified Architectural Technician or Technologist with knowledge of both construction and project management, you will supervise the day-to-day construction and completion of all new schools, additions, and related renovation activities for the Board. You will partner with internal and external stakeholders as you direct all construction activities, including design and implementation, in support of the organization’s strategic objectives and project plans, and in compliance with relevant regulation, legislative standards, and Ministry directives, while ensuring that staff and students enjoy a safe and functional learning, teaching and working environment.
As a Construction Supervisor, you will lead an external team of consultants, engineers, architects and contractors by providing technical and problem-solving guidance on all design, construction and implementation aspects, as well as supervise both internal and external resources to ensure adherence to budget, timelines and requirements. Providing project management expertise, you will monitor progress and develop reports to ensure project plans (timelines, budgets) of varying complexities and lengths (multi-year) are met successfully, review, authorize and negotiate all aspects of change requests and contracts, and ensure that all project documentation is kept up-to-date.
We will also rely on you to manage the construction site to ensure that ongoing school operations (vehicle drop-offs, parking, classrooms, alarm systems, etc.) are maintained during construction, from conducting weekly site inspections to identify issues, to reviewing and addressing construction-related concerns raised by third-party testing and inspection companies. Similarly, the Manager of Facility Design and Construction will count on you to support end-to-end construction projects by providing technical design guidance on project requirements, assisting with the preparation of project plans, timelines, budgets and resources, managing aspects of the tender process, and providing ongoing support post-occupancy.
Leveraging your knowledge of best practices, you will partner with DDSB departments – such as IT, childcare, custodial and maintenance – to coordinate moves to a new facility/addition, address any concerns or complaints raised by staff and external stakeholders such as neighbours or the public, and ensure timely reviews with local, municipal and regional authorities. Meeting construction-related health and safety requirements is another important part of your job, from providing personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of staff and visitors touring sites under construction, to identifying and organizing school staff training on building operations and functionality, and various systems.
