Eaton’s Electrical sector is currently seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Burlington, ON office.
Position Overview:
Responsible for developing the power electronics hardware and technology for the next generation digital products. This role plays a key role in all phases of product and technology development including requirements definition, product architecture and specification development in collaboration with product marketing, circuit design for embedded systems, product verification and certification testing, and release to production.
As this role is a technical leadership role within the business, the person in this role is expected to be an individual with deep technical capability within power electronics, power controllers and converters with a strong emphasis on the application into a system. The other key aspects of this role will include reviewing control products in Eaton portfolio and developing custom solutions for Canada market based on strategic business plan. This will require involvement in developments on the forefront through collaboration with global development teams and taking on custom work for Canada. Development and support of Fire Pump Controller, Electrical Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, Energy Transition System, digital connected devices and solutions are some of the key functions for this role. The role will include developing architecture documents and product specification for third party partnership projects.

In this function you will:
Work closely with product marketing team to develop digital roadmap and to build product definition and execution plan.
Serve as the customer facing technical lead or principal investigator on technology projects including but not limited to power conversion, power systems analysis, power systems control and energy storage system integration.
Lead Fire Pump Controller product development and growth plan. Transfer development knowledge from third party.
Work with Product Marketing to build architecture and functional specification documents for power hardware – EV chargers, rectifiers, inverters etc.
Build PCBA outsourcing plan for cost optimization.
Perform tests and evaluations for design validation and qualification. Conduct DFM review. Create design scorecard.
Develop, implement, and test power and controller hardware using PCBA tools such as (Xpedition, Cadence etc) as needed.
Support plant industrialization through introduction of board prototypes to the production stage.
Define subsystem and system-level tests to characterize parametric specifications for power converter controls features.
Work with the firmware team to build FW load and program the board for testing.
Support, organize, and prepare samples for compliance testing.
Prepare documentation for functional specifications, operational procedures, design details, test plans, verification reports, manufacture releasing and bill of materials.
Interface with Sourcing and Purchasing to ensure suppliers products are meeting specifications.
Support Manufacturing in developing Final Acceptance Tests for the control hardware.
Support PLC/HMI/Drives programming for production setup.
Meet the schedule and quality requirements for all project deliverables.
Actively participate in continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Required (Basic) Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering
5 years’ experience in power electronics development in control systems and/or industrial power conversion equipment
5 -10 years of power electronics design experience
Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design concepts, especially related to high power inverter/converter design
Hands-on skills with proficiency at troubleshooting circuits with appropriate lab tools

Design experience in power electronics circuits (three-phase inverters, DC/DC power supplies, etc.)
Control hardware design experience including low power logic hardware circuit design, PCB layout with signal integrity and EMI considerations
Component analysis experience and device characterization of IGBTs, MOSFETs, and high frequency capacitors
Experience with analog design of signal conditioning and filter circuitry
Understanding of EMI noise reduction techniques, PCB layout, gate drive design, thermal management, voltage and current sensing techniques and protection circuitry
Ability to prepare detailed technical specifications based on marketing and sales input that capture customer requirements.
Detailed oriented in the organization of documentation related to design concepts, validation, and product release requirements
Demonstrated expertise in laboratory testing and experience with test equipment including oscilloscopes, data acquisition equipment, spectrum analyzers, etc.
Proficiency of the architecture, specification, and hardware design in the area of power control systems or industrial power conversion equipment (VFDs, EV Chargers, renewables)
Experience with agency approval requirements and design for regulatory compliance (UL, CE)
Ability to review and update embedded Firmware for controller application
Understanding of hardware security implementation using digital certificates is a plus
Programming experience in C/C++ as well as good knowledge of scripting languages such as python is a plus
Experience in the use of modeling tools, i.e. Matlab/Simulink, LTSpice, Maxwell, etc. is a plus.
