Position Summary
The Mental Health Worker is an integral member of the Esquimalt Nation Community. This position works within the Health and Programs Departments to provide a range of mental health services to children, youth, and their families. The Mental Health Worker will work in collaboration with the Health Department, the Administration, and the Esquimalt Nation Community to provide crisis intervention to children, youth, and their families, in addition to consulting with program staff to ensure early intervention and health child mental health development. The Mental Health Worker will provide a wide range of supports to Nation members including referrals to treatment facilities and local resources, assistance with legal challenges and obtaining legal aid, domestic violence and housing crisis supports. In addition, the Mental Health Worker requires a sound understanding of normal and delayed development, behaviour, and barriers, as well as addictions theory, motivational theory, and the effects of trauma and abuse, inclusive of sexual abuse. This position may assist in the development and facilitation of mental health groups for adults, children, and youth at Esquimalt Nation, as well as provide on-one-one support to members.
Primary Responsibilities
Group Facilitation & Program Support
· Designs and facilitates group therapy/program sessions for Esquimalt Nation members
· Works collaboratively with the Health Department, the Administration and the Chief and Council to deliver informative group sessions to assist members in a variety of mental health service areas
· Works within the inter-disciplinary team to build capacity toward developing evidence-based programs and training for communities and related health staff and partners
· Provides consultation, education and information to individuals, families, community, and caregivers about mental wellness
· Assists the program department in providing behavioral supports and ensuring all team members can understand and deliver on the individual care plans for children and youth
· Works to infuse cultural ceremony, tradition, and customs into and around related duties where appropriate and as needed
· Collaborates with community health staff, Traditional Healers, families, and community resources as needed
· Develops, recommends, and implements practices and procedures to improve quality access to mental wellness services to community and provides advocacy to address barriers of service
Counselling, Outreach and Referrals
· Provides direct clinical services such as assessment and crisis intervention, consultation with outside agencies, schools, and hospitals
· Provides comprehensive assessment and treatment planning and conducts individual, group and family therapy
· Maintains appropriate clinical/client/administrative records
· Promotes and maintains effective working relationships with members and families, physicians, schools and hospitals to coordinate services, secure input, cooperation, resolve conflicts, influence outcomes, provide community consultation and provide educational services and training on emotional and behavioral disturbances
· Therapy service areas may include trauma, anger, spirituality, parenting, abuse, stress, grief, depression, anxiety, dissociation, substance abuse and addiction issues
· Provides support to members who require to obtain legal support and/or legal aid for issues relating to criminal/family matters
· Evaluates outcomes to ensure effectiveness of services through continuous follow-up plans and actions
· Provides referrals to external agencies, internal services, Traditional Healers, and other culturally relevant resources
· Provides referrals to treatment centers for members experiencing substance abuse issues, eating disorders and/or other significant personal challenges

Training, Education, and Experience
· BSW or BA in a related field plus 1 years’ experience, or Child and Youth Care or relevant discipline plus 2 years’ experience.
· Minimum of 2 years of experience in offering addictions counselling
· Minimum of 3 years of full-time experience working with children, youth, and their families, with responsibly for providing a wide range of community based mental health services and/or referrals
· Trauma Informed Practice training
· Cultural Safety Training
· Experience working in First Nations Communities (preferred)
· Experience in working with brain-based disabilities such as FASD and ADHD (preferred)
· Preference may be given to applicants to have Indigenous heritage (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit) with the required combination of education and experience
