The academic strategist supports secondary and postsecondary students using a holistic approach, one-to-one, providing a safe and nurturing support system to help students strengthen their self-regulation and executive functioning skills, optimize their learning experience, and improve their academic performance and overall well-being. The role of an academic learning strategist is to help students identify their strengths, assist them in developing personalized learning strategies to meet the challenges of academic life, teach emotional regulation skills, and encourage self-reflection. Academic strategists help clients with goal setting, time management, understanding assignments, emotional and self-regulation, reading effectively, studying for tests and exams, and developing writing strategies. The role requires a reliable and professional individual who can work independently and demonstrate excellent judgement, initiative, patience, organization, English communication skills, and a strong theory of mind.
Ideal candidates must:
· Possess a strong understanding of how to establish rapport and a relationship with a student.
· Have experience integrating emotional regulation and behavioural interventions to optimize academic outcomes for students.
· Have and demonstrate excellent English verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency with the grammar and mechanics of writing.
· Possess a working knowledge of research-informed secondary and postsecondary-level academic skills and strategies.
· Possess a working knowledge of research-informed academic writing strategies and have a strong understanding of the expectations of secondary and postsecondary-level writing.
· Be knowledgeable of secondary and postsecondary level research techniques.
· Know how to support diverse learners and understand learning disabilities, emotional and self-dysregulation, ADHD, ASD, and executive functions (as they relate to learning).
· Have expertise/experience and demonstrated proficiency in tutoring, teaching, mentoring, and/or delivering programming and/or curricula to youth and young adults.
· Have a solid knowledge of, and comfort level with, the use of technology to support learning.
· Have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically with diverse populations, including parents, students, teachers, and other professionals.
· Have effective planning and organizational skills, including the ability to manage and keep track of time, maintain records to document how program time is spent, and collect objective data to measure mentoring efficacy against mutual goals.
· Can exercise good judgment and use discretion with confidential information.
· Be available and able to commit to a one-year contract.
· Be available for a minimum of 8 hours a week, including possible evenings and weekends.
Contract duties and deliverables include:
· Deliver individualized learning plans for students with a broad range of disabilities based on each student’s unique needs, personal and academic goals.
· Co-create personalized SMART goals and action plans for student success by analyzing student performance, identifying barriers to academic success, implementing interventions in response to the emotional and self-regulation needs of students, and developing strategies to optimize performance.
· Teach emotional and self-regulation skills.
· Integrate behavioural interventions for students with self and emotional dysregulation.
· Teach students research-informed learning skills and strategies to support study skills, executive function, written expression, and self-advocacy.
· Assist students with advocating for and accessing their accommodations and support.
· Help students prepare for tests and exams.
· Facilitate completion of homework.
· Help students initiate assignments and chunk work.
· Promote the development of student self-efficacy.
· Proactively monitor student academic progress and performance using Evoke progress tools.
· Provide weekly written feedback directly to families, keeping Evoke apprised of student progress.
· Maintain accurate, thorough, up-to-date records of student contact, growth, progress, feedback, and performance, ensuring the confidentiality of all records.
· Prepare for student lessons, as required.
· Maintain responsibility for own schedule and book weekly sessions directly with Evoke clients.
· Create student homework materials, weekly, as required.
· Collaborate with Evoke, as necessary, in support of student needs.
· Participate in orientation to Evoke materials, and new materials as needed, to ensure understanding of programming.
Education and Experience:
· A Master’s degree in social work, behavioural studies, developmental psychology, psychology, cognitive science, adult learning, and development, learning strategies, educational psychology, counselling psychology, special education, disability studies, neurodiversity, special education, education, or a related field, is required.
· Postgraduate specialty training in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), behaviour management training (BMT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotional Regulation Therapy, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) would be considered an exceptional asset in this role.
· A minimum of two years’ experience in a similar student service or advising role within a diverse secondary and postsecondary context.
· Expertise, knowledge, and skills in implementing behavioural strategies for students who struggle with emotional and self-dysregulation, understanding the impact of emotional dysregulation affects academic achievement and appropriate interventions.
This is a remote, independent contracted position. Independent contractors are responsible for providing their own tools and equipment (i.e., laptop, mobile device, webcam, headphones, etc.) and creating their own schedule. Evoke does not provide in-home services to clients. All services are delivered virtually.
Successful candidates will need to complete a background check and writing skills test and submit references.
Salary: $45-$50 per client hour Job Type: Independent Contractor
