Job Description Summary
Systems engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on an approach, mindset, and process. All activities that consider both the business and the technical needs of the customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user’s needs. The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of systems, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate system design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation.
Job Description
Responsible for systems engineering activities that support:
Primary design focus areas for our Mechanical Systems teams include:
BWR Mechanical Balance of Plant (BOP) and Turbine Island (TI) Systems
BWR HVAC & Fire Protection
Roles and Responsibilities
Perform system design activities including: system design specifications, piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), logic diagrams, process flow calculations and diagrams, hydraulic resistance calculations, equipment sizing, FMEA evaluations, and thermodynamic and heat/fluid flow transfer.
Performs system design activities including: Main Turbine Design, Mechanical System Design, Fire Protection Design, HVAC design, and site construction.
Conducts component and product integration. All activities that span multiple components and products and are concerned with how to integrate for maximum performance and operability.
Manages product and systems requirements, specifications, and flow down.
Drives validation and verification activities for the overall product/system, including system level testing.
Responsible for driving CTQ / Risk trades within the teams designing the components. Manages the overall product configuration and configuration control system.
Broadening knowledge of own technical discipline to execute policy/strategy. May include support roles with specialized technical field of knowledge; still acquiring higher level knowledge and skills.
Basic understanding of key business drivers; uses this understanding to accomplish own work. Good understanding of how work of own team integrates with other teams and contributes to the area.
May have some autonomy to make decisions within a defined framework. Resolves issues in situations that require good technical knowledge and judgment within established procedures. Consults more senior team members for issues outside of defined instructions/parameters.
A job at this level requires good interpersonal skills. For customer facing roles, develops strong customer relationships and serves as the interface between customer and GE. Explains technical information to others.
Required Qualifications
Desired Characteristics
1+ year of engineering experience related to Mechanical Systems designs including experience with Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), process flow calculations, etc.
Interest in Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
Experience and/or interest in nuclear power industry.
6+ months of experience with advanced reactor technology systems (from an internship or research project is acceptable) – advanced reactor technology systems including with small modular reactors (SMRs), sodium fast reactors, molten salt reactors, high-temperature gas reactors, space reactors.
Eligibility Requirements
Working on site in Markham two days a week.
