DIRECTOR – EQUITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION (EDI)
Regular Full-Time – Hamilton, ON
The work of Good Shepherd is based on a fundamental belief in providing hope and restoring dignity to the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our community. Our services include emergency food and clothing; emergency shelters for men, youth, families, women and children; transitional housing and education for homeless and street-involved youth; seniors services and assisted living; hospice palliative care; community mental health programs; and supportive housing programs.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officers, the Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strives to enhance the dignity and quality of life of clients, tenants, co-workers and the broader community by providing leadership and collaborating at all levels of the Good Shepherd organization in creating safer, more inclusive and equity-driven employment and service environments across Good Shepherd.
Through responsible leadership and effective role modelling, the Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will be accountable for the implementation of the Mission, Vision and Values of the Good Shepherd. Founded on the values of Responsibility, Availability, Hospitality, Adaptability, Quality and Dignity, the Director will facilitate and support the ongoing development and integration of an intersectional anti-racist/anti-oppressive framework in all aspects of Good Shepherd operations. The Director of EDI will provide strategic leadership that supports Good Shepherd in building a progressively safer, more inclusive and equitable working culture by making EDI part of all we do.
Working across Good Shepherd’s various entities to lead and enable organizational growth, the Director serves as Good Shepherd’s champion for EDI strategic initiatives and plans. The Director works with leadership, management, stakeholders, finance, and HR colleagues to drive change and EDI-related communications throughout the organization and fosters an inclusive and supportive environment for equity-deserving and all members of the community. The Director works to embed EDI into every aspect of Good Shepherd’s culture and operations, and facilitates learning opportunities for staff to grow awareness and competency. The incumbent develops and implements tracking strategies, metrics, monitoring, and reporting systems to effectively benchmark organizational progress. The Director monitors best practices and current legislation and, where required, guides Good Shepherd through necessary administrative changes.
As the ideal candidate, you are a dynamic leader with progressive experience and accomplishments advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex organization. Supported by your academic, professional, and/or lived expertise, you capably and confidently partner with senior management to better understand how to align leaders around EDI objectives, and have a proven track record of successfully developing, implementing, and assessing EDI strategies, initiatives, and programs. As well, you are an activator with strong organization skills, readily able to translate big picture thinking into operational details in order to move things forward. You are comfortable dealing with ambiguity and a complex, multi-stakeholder environment where you expertly navigate competing priorities. You are curious, adaptive, courageous, creative, kind, innovative, empathetic, and an outstanding communicator who creates and sustains inclusive workplace cultures. You are a change-agent with good judgement and negotiating skills. You have completed post-secondary education in a relevant field (equity studies, disability studies, or related discipline) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
