About Us

Communications and Public Engagement (CPE) is the Government of Alberta’s full-service communications, public relations and marketing agency.

CPE provides planning, execution and measurement of all communications efforts. Its expert staff provide specialized services across the spectrum of communications and marketing from research, design, writing and social media, to event coordination, issues management, digital communications, advertising and public engagement.

The agency staffs the external communications functions in all departments of government and its operations branch, with a mandate of enhancing communications between the people and the Government of Alberta.

Role

This is an entry level communications position to provide a recent graduate with mentorship and supervised, practical experience in the public relations field. The focus of the position is to gain experience and develop skills in the areas of writing, editing, events-planning, project management, client consultation, communications planning and social media management, issues identification and analysis.

Duties Include:

  • Writing and editing materials for both internal and external audiences.
  • Researching audiences, program background and history, intent/objectives, desired results and key messages.
  • Drafting key messages, speeches/speaking notes, news releases and web and social media content.
  • Assisting senior communications branch staff with communications planning and/or communications projects.
  • Assisting in the coordination of graphic design and promotional material production as required, ensuring government guidelines and standards are met.
  • Assisting with arrangements for special events, news conferences, and displays or information booths.

Qualifications

A Diploma or University degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, English, Journalism or other related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalencies to be considered as below:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; OR 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Please note: In accordance with the Government of Alberta internship guidelines, applicants who graduated more than two years ago will not be eligible for this position.

The successful candidate will also have the following:

  • Research, writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to write a variety of communications products (i.e. speeches, news releases, advertising, articles, briefing notes, social media posts, website content)
  • Understanding of issues management
  • Understanding of communications planning
  • Understanding of the web and social media as communications tools
  • Ability to be creative in writing and communications planning
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and Windows

Assets:

  • Knowledge of Canadian Press Style Guides.
  • Knowledge of graphic design and print production techniques.
  • Knowledge of Government of Alberta Visual Identity Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) legislation, policies and procedures.

As part of the selection process, qualified applicants will be required to participate in a writing test.

Salary

$2,310.48 to $3,030.81 bi-weekly ($60,303.53 to $79,104.14/year)

Hours of work are 36.25 hours weekly.

This position is located in Edmonton, Alberta. This is a temporary salary position from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024.

The successful candidates will be evaluated on a combination of experience and education.

As part of the selection process, qualified applicants will be required to participate in a timed writing test.
